I have the a6000 along with several other Sony professional cameras. The a6000 is my "go to" camera for quick shots and travel. You might also consider one of the "better" point and shoot cameras such as the Sony RX series (used) You need to evaluate you needs and actual use. For most people that end up buying a changeable lens camera never change lenses. They would be $$$ ahead buying a point and shoot. There are a few point and shoot cameras that actually outperform the changeable lens cameras. I suggest that you go to the camera store and play with them. Don't be swayed by "what's on sale" or other sales tactics. Do your homework and read reviews and then go play with the cameras. I really like sony products but if you decide on Canon, the Canon factory offers "factory refurbished cameras at a very reasonable price and they come with the Factory Warranty. Happy Shooting

Like ORpilot, the a6000 is also my "goto" travel camera. Out of the box in auto, it does a great job. But, as you learn the (little complex) menu system, it's where the camera really shines. Mine came with the original 18-55 and 55-210 kits lenses. Now, unless you buy the body by itself, the kit is the 16-50. Sony's minimum advertised price is $548 for that kit. If swingable, I would purchase the body only (new for $448) and pick up a 18-105mm f/4 G lens ($545 new, $425+ used). It's a super combination and what I use for 90% of my shots with the camera. Refurbished a6000 with the 16-50mm lens can usually be found for about $450-$470. However, if you decide to investigate that route, make sure it's a Sony refurbishment and that a warranty applies. Many are sold without warranty. Buyer beware.

An a6000 is about $560 with kit lens.

If you can snag a used one for about
half that, I'd just do it. You will receive
more posts asking "what purpose" etc,
and that allows those respondents to
to appear both expert and helpful, but
basically all cameras are pretty similar.

The a6000, as so many helpful experts
will assure you, is verrrry many users'
go-to camera, and also one of the best
values on the market. So if it's a great
price, don't worry about what might, in
theory, be "more correct" choices. Just
buy the thing and get on with using it !

FWIW, it was also my go-to for a long
time, and is still in regular use altho my
current go-to is something else, mainly
cuz the "something else" is weatherized.
If not for that one difference I'd still be
toting the a6000 most everywhere I go.

So again, if the price is around $300, or
less, and if there's a return privilege, I'd
say just go for it :-)

Freda stated that she is on a fixed income and probably can not go the route you are suggesting.
Freda the A600 is an excellent camera, I had one I got many good images with it.
What is the asking price of this used one you are thinking about buying?
If you let us know we can tell you whether that is a good price or not.

I own an A6000 and I love it! If it is being offered with the kit lens you should not pay more than about $350 for it - there are regular listings on the local Craigs List at about that price, plus always a couple at higher prices that do not sell.

I would certainly buy David Busch's book on the camera, especially if your experience is limited. This is a camera that you will struggle with for a day or so and then you are off and running - if you want to go a lot further into photography this is a camera that will take you there very nicely.

There are very cheap lens options available if you are willing to use manual focus lenses. Feel free to private message me later if you decide that is of interest.

Good luck and have fun!

The A6000 is a big camera on a small camera body. It's very capable and rewarding, and delivers good images. Even the kit lens does a pretty fair job, but when you are in a position to pick up a better lens, the images can be amazing. It's always a good bet. I had a couple A6000's and sold both of them Should have kept them. I now have the A6300 which is basically the same camera with a few more features and controls. If I were you, I'd grab up an A6000, used at a good price. Some of the suggestions are pretty much spot on.

Freda, the A6000 is an excellent choice for you. Go for it. Learn its full capabilities.
Will you get a lens with it? If you can only afford one lens, I would go for the Sony E 18-105mm F4.0 G OSS.

I bought one a few years ago, and find it one of the most capable cameras that I own. Check Gary Fong's web site or you tube on tutorial on setting up the menus

I've had one for a couple of years, and it's the camera I use when I need something small. Once you get used to the controls, it's a nice camera. See below to see what they've sold for on eBay recently.

I don't own one but it seems very highly regarded by those here who have it.
So if in your budget you can't go wrong.

Consider one issue. I had a 2 year old A6000 and suddenly the SD slot and board failed. Camera would not recognize the card. I researched Mr. Google and found others had the same issue. Repair estimate by Sony qualified vendor ~ $225; local shop ~$200.

Action: sold the A6000 for parts $100, bought an A6500 ... happy.
Would I buy an A6000 - Yes, absolutely but New only or Open Box with some warranty.

If the price is right, you can’t go wrong with this camera. It is my go to camera for travel. It is light weight with and has very good image quality.
