I'm considering buying one of the two above and would like your opinion.
Currently I have: Nikon 18-200mm (which I will sell), Nikon 105mm 2.8 D macro and Nikon 50mm 1.8
I shoot with a Nikon D5500
Reason: I would like a longer reach for birds, etc.
Thanks.

I shoot with a D3400 and had a kit 70-300 dx lens NO VR. I found a used AF-S 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR ED G and I LOVE IT. I realize this is a lens designed for a full frame camera, but relative to the 70-300 DX VR version(that my father has) it is way sharper and the one stop of f stop, while seems slight makes a huge difference.

is a link to some of my shots. I shoot mostly urban wildlife and BIF. The lens works for me. I recommend whichever way you go, search for a good used copy from a reliable source.

Best

The absolute best choice is the Tamron 18-400. You will really enjoy the extra reach it provides and the image quality is amazing. It has excellent auto focus. It’s not even a matter of cost, the Tamron is just a lot more useful. Of course the Tamron is also a much better value. I’ve had one for two months and am still amazed at how great this lens is. Please take the Nikon elitist with a grain of salt, they cannot help themselves.

Not to confuse you even more. I use the nikkor 18-200 on my d7200 and love it. As for a birdING lens I use a sigma 150-600 C. Love that too. You can get the sigma for less than $1000.

I have the Nikon 70-300 VR which is a good lense I purchased the Tamron 18-400 this Spring and I love it wide angle and reach very helpful. Fast auto focus great images light weight I shoot with dad 7200, 7000, and 750. Great for birding without the bulk of the 150-600 zooms

Why not keeping the 18-200 and buying a used, if you do not want to spend more money, 70-300 VR. It is a very good lens and will be useful for many wildlife shots.
If you are really into wildlife photography then your lens is the 80-400 or the 200-500.

Great photos. Were they all taken with the 70-300 lens? I just picked one up used and have yet to try it out on either of my bodies. Looking forward to using it.

I've only had my Tamron 18-400 lens off my camera a handful of times since getting it last October. It's a very useful all-around lens and I'm very happy with it.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.
You help me to make a decision for the Tamron 18-400mm.
