I read somewhere , think its was from Nikon and relate to their new Z6&7, that a new form of memory card the will replace/complement the , expensive, XQD card and give Sony some competition . Anyone heard anything ?

As I understand it, XQD or CFexpress cards will work in the Z bodies.

LOL, yeah, I'm sure the replacement will be bargain priced! It will be roughly the same card with different software'formats, whatever, and we will pay for this great technology. Those who have cameras that use these cards are captive and will continue to pay.

Having said that, I do like the features of the cards.

I was hoping that a bit if competition would help reduce the exorbitant prices of the XQD cards .

So the new ones will be CFExpress , anyone heard when these might be available .

Nikon Rumors has had some articles of late, here's a link:

My D850 will accept one SD card and one XQD card. So far, I just use the SD slot.

That would suffice for most of my efforts as well. I use the XQD's for my primary and have plenty of them to share with the D500. Nice quick download and may be an advantage for BIF, albeit quite infrequent or even verifiable. Even though I download daily on trips, I save the XQD's until I get home.

My D4 has one slot of XQD and one for CF. I make the XQD my primary mainly for the faster download speed. But they are pricey. Anyone know if the CFExpress cards are interchangeable with XQD - I doubt it.

Did you check the previously posted link? Might be some info there.

Thanks - I did read the notices on the Nikon Rumors site. But the messages were inconsistent. One manufacturer (Delkin) says they are not compatible, another (anonymous Lexar employee at a trade show) says they are interchangeable, but with a software patch. Does the patch render the existing XQD cards unusable? If so, that's not good as I already made a significant investment in XQD cards.

Nothing is easy and straightforward.

I didn't spend much time reading, but I thought I saw where there are still modifications needed for the XQD software configuration that would be no big deal. I have no particular need for a faster card at this time, so my interest in spending more for a card is quite limited.

I've read that XQD cards are, physically, considerably more robust than SDs, in addition to being faster. In theory, this should make them more reliable over the long term. If that's true (I've never actually seen one, as none of my cameras use 'em) it may be one reason why Nikon put only a single slot in their new Z bodies, as there may be less perceived need for a second card as backup.

Although personally I've never had an SD card fall apart or otherwise fail on me, I've read stories that that can (will?) happen, especially if you use 'em hard every day.

Nikon has been using dual card slots for several years. While that means you can double your storage capacity, you have the option to use the second slot for a backup copy or a different format and I doubt it was eliminated for anything other than space, weight and cost. The XQD cards, in my opinion, have not been used by many in comparison to SD cards nor have they been around long enough to get much feedback. I do hope that they prove to be super reliable!

According to Nikon, CFExpress compatibility will be available in the "future" after a software update.
