Fotomacher's post of a few days ago is still going strong, I know. I just figured that, by now, nobody would be taking anything posted there seriously since ChrisT has Hijacked the thread. So I was wondering if any of you had seen this: https://www.sansmirror.com/newsviews/the-card-failure-issue.html . I believe that most folks here know Thom Hogan to be a reliable source of photo info.

That was a good read. I guess I would prefer 1 XQD to 2 SD card.

Right now I deal with XQD/CF, XQD/SD, XQD/SD, SD/SD

Thanks!

As I remember it, Chris T was told by ADMIN to keep this his own threads. Hopefully, ADMIN will take this opportunity to kick him off the board completely.

Yes, those XQD cards are awesome. I've bever had any problems with SD cards but that's another level right there.

I just checked his last couple of posts, to see if they/he had improved. Alas, he is NOT a fine wine... no improvement with age. To help preserve my last, tenuous vestige of sanity, I hit the "ignore" button. Instantly, I felt better.

On the much more interesting subject of Memory Card Failure.

I agree with those who have commented on failure mitigation measures and root cause analysis... ultimately, any potential failure root cause can be mitigated if money and time is no object. For those who need to earn a living through photography, while not crapping out on a commission, the most likely root causes are mitigated by backup solutions (e.g. cards, bodies, lenses, batteries, chargers, other essential items for specific commissions, etc.), and by regular depreciation and disposal of "used items".

Suggesting myself as an example, I depreciate and dispose of my photography gear as follows:
CF and SD Cards (all my bodies have 1 CF and 1 SD slot) - 1 year (I buy 32 Gb cards currently)
Bodies - 3 years (currently, I'm buying a new 5D Mk IV and 7D Mk II every 18 months on rotation, so I have at least 1 body of each under warranty and 1 used between 13 & 18 months, at any given time)
Lenses - 5 years (as in bodies, duplicates/upgrades purchased every 24-36 months)
Everything Else - 3 years or as commission usage dictates. I synchronize my hardware budget with my Canon contract and find this series of calendar events easy to manage; I'm also unlikely ever to be seriously "down" at any commission.

Thank you for the link on card failure. He has stated what I have been touting for a long time but far more eloquently.

I have never had a memory card fail in camera. Started out with 2MP Canon Camera with Compact Flash card. Gave away cards as file sizes increased. Now keep smaller cards in old cameras, use 32MB & 64MB SDHC cards in newest cameras.
Only card problems were from pulling card out of computer before removing desktop icon; recovered most of files still on cards with software; reformatted cards and continued to use them. Even computer corruption has stopped with latest SDHC cards.
Why I want two (SD) card slots: I keep one or two cards plugged in to the computer at all times. Sometimes I switch card positions in the camera to segregate subjects in the field. I edit from the cards and do not waste computer space with the rejects.
I will continue to trust the cards until they DO start failing. My back up is to carry two cameras to any important event.

This is also an effective โ€œrisk of lossโ€ mitigation model. I too have never yet (fingers crossed!) suffered a single card failure, but as cards are the cheapest point of potential failure, I chose multiple smaller capacity cards with annual replacement.

BTW, I assumed you meant 32 & 64Gb, rather than Mb... ๐Ÿ˜‰
