I am generally a nature photographer. I have to do some staff portraits. Most of the staff will be wearing white shirts and ties. What recomendations are there for the color of background I should use? The results will be framed 8X10's.
A neutral grey background usually works best for this kind of work, unless a corporate color or theme is requested.
definitely agree with neutral gray. you can use a white background and it will come out gray as long as you do not light the background.
I have used a light blue and had good results

I like blue or grey. What kind of lighting are you using? That will make a difference and if you are lighting a center spot on the background. You mentioned you shoot nature mostly, you could use an out of focus dark foliage background with the sun as a hair light and a small flash as a fill light for the faces.
I do a ton of these and prefer a medium blue, but the gray also works just as well. White needs proper lighting if you want it to stay white (or you get the gray you want anyway) and black absolutely will require a hair/separation light.
Try to talk them out of white shirts and go for something like a blue oxford cloth. The white is not horrible, but a light blue looks better and is less likely to blow out.
