Strange Phenomenon

This is the French Breitling team - a sort of privately owned Red Arrows but not quite as good (imho). Anyway, they were hurtling around the sky and I duly followed as best I could - into the sun and out again - and when I later looked at the result I was surprised to see these shadows. Never seen that before, have you? There's a shadow evident in the first shot too.

A "cloud shadow?" See https://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/rayim13.htm

And a couple I caught, which may or may not be the same event as yours

Cloud Shadows, from natural clouds, yes. The "leading" cloud shadows of the planes in the second image on the haze, no. But then I would not look at or aim my camera at the Sun that closely. I'm in So. California, USA, at about 34 degrees N. In the UK you are looking at the Sun from a different angle mid-day and through more and usually cooler and damper atmosphere.

Nice atmospheric effects Linda. You've captured some unusual light. When I see weird stuff I never seem to have a camera with me. Though I have shot clouds in Infrared, or back ages ago using a # 25A or 29 Red filter with B&W film! I tend to get my best skies and many other shots closer to dusk or dawn.

Same sort of thing I guess, only mine are smoke trail shadows. I like the alignment with the aircraft. I will go back through some older air show pics and see if theres anything similar, but I don't recall seeing the,.
Thanks for the link and your pics Linda, sheds light on my shadows!

Yeah, that's not something I would normally do, or recommend, but when you're following them at that speed you don't know where they're taking you - I sort of came out the other side slightly dazed!

I have seen shadows. Attack aircraft looking for stealthy invaders look for shadows on the ground, as an interesting aside.

But, back to the important thing, photography! The first strikes me as catching the excitement of the outdoors and sound. I like it very much.

These are very interesting out of the ordinary air show shots. I would also share an aversion to shoot into bright sunlight; but the effect you got really is phenomenal.

Yes, I think that’s the feel it gives me Bob. Thanks for your comments.

Pity it was totally unintentional Erich - but that’s what happens sometimes isn’t it?
