I went to our County Show at the weekend as I'd read about a display of camel racing being included in the programme - and what fun it was! The riders really did their very best to ensure that all the spectators enjoyed the event. And they were not camera shy! Always difficult to get close to thefence of the main arena, but I sussed-out what was going on at their first display and rocked-up early for their second. I wanted some head-on stuff (you know how I like that) and it turned out rather nicely. There is a lot of junk in the background, naturally, but when I eventually use some of these for composites, they'll do nicely. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the fun of the race?
The fun is very evident, for sure. Looking for decisive moments must have been tricky
.
OMG - these are great fun.

Hmm...as you’ve guessed RG, it was all decisive moments! Those things don’t run in a gainly manner. They take to lifting their feet in pairs when running, which gives a lolloping gait, then, as they reduce to a trot they adopt the horses method. Result is a fairly rough ride for the jockey. Apparently camel racing is extremely popular in Dubai, although betting is forbidden. Reckon it could catch on here!
#3 is spectacular! And the distance from the "junk" in #2 and #3 make the background very much part of the playful mood.
Did you know that Alice Springs, Australia, also has camel races?

The rider definitely played to the camera in that one Linda!
Yes, the lady commentator (who runs the camel show) mentioned it was popular in Oz.
Perhaps 'at a track near you' soon?

As a spectator, maybe. I don't think I'd bounce too good from that height

Definitely Fun. I could not help but think of Peter O'Toole. I found this quote he made about trying to ride camels.
Turf Paradise sponsors an "alternative racing day" every year in March. They have camels and ostriches. The jockeys say the camels are sort of "unsteerable."
Terrific series. I particularly like the last one. I think the big smile on his face puts the shot over the top

Looks like you really had some fun with this. I can't wait to see what you come up with for the composites. I'm going to a motorcycle race this weekend. I always try to get some "regular" nice action shots; but I think I'll also be shooting this weekend with composites in mind. We shall see.

Funnily enough, I particularly wanted some camel shots to combine with some intended Brough Superior shots (TEL being the connection of course). If the composite comes about you can be sure I’ll post it here!
Regarding O’Tooles comment - the young lady in my pictures was riding a camel for the first time, and definitely had crutch problems!

That’s exactly how they looked APL, they veered from one side of the track to the other, apparently without warning!

Yes, that’s my favourite from the day Frank. Thanks for your comments.

Hope you’re going to post some results from both the weekend and the eventual composites Erich?
