It is difficult to tell from a rear view, but I believe it's a starling.

Don't know but looks like a juvenile which could make it hard to identify.

Not sure what it is but 100% positive it is not a startling juvy or adult

Not the same. Check the beaks. First photo bird has much larger beak. Good photos, though.

I was just looking at my Audubon book. The first photo is of a seed-eater; the second one is of an insect eater. Neither of them are starlings-too small. Could you tell the sizes?

both small birds- sparrow size

They were in a fish and game wildlife area, rural, wooded and running and standing water nearby. No bird feeders around.

Thanks. Taken on overcast day in a heavily treed area. I think the Nikon did ok :)

I agree with the observations above. I think the first one is a juvenile spotted towhee and the second one definitely looks like a song sparrow. The songs sparrows in the West seem darker than the eastern song sparrows from my experience.
