I can remember back to the published AP feature photo the day after Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown. That magnificent horse, with all four feet off the track, in flying splendor! Being just two years out of college, my (farming) background still had me doubting what I was seeing. How could a horse "fly" for even a split second. Eventually, after seeing other racing steeds do that via slow mo replay over the years, the "wheels up" feat just faded away.
Fast forward to several weeks ago when my wife and I traveled our usual route to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. With a third of that route traveling through Amish country, my lady typically does some point-n-shot "grab" photography provided I can slow down to a crawl... traffic permitting. On this day, I had my vehicle flashers on as we closed in on an Amish buggy part way up a somewhat steep incline. Some nasty accidents have occurred at these junctures with the impatience of some travelers. My eyes were on the road as I prayed that no one behind us would do the unthinkable and try to beat the buggy to the crest.
Meanwhile, my wife did her photo thing. When I downloaded the day's pix, I quickly noticed the "Secretariat" four feet up maneuver in this photo. Look closely... this is a buggy horse pulling two adults up a hill... with ALL FOUR off the ground. NEVER THOUGHT IT POSSIBLE IN THIS SITUATION.
Excellent! Planning that must have taken real skill! : )

Jerry, my wife just smiled and said, "Sure!"
NICE shot of the levitating horse!
Ever seen Eadweard Muybridge's photographs? (Bet he'd have loved to have a modern camera he could put in 'burst' mode....)

His work on animal locomotion photography would be interesting to see. Do you know if all of his work is on display on the West Coast?

No idea if or where any of Muybridge's studies might be on display, but there's plenty to see on line. I only ever saw some at Yale Univ. years and years ago, and those were on loan from who knows where.

Appreciate your follow-up. Thanks.
Nice shot! By the way, if you know horses, you know that the situation is pretty common.
