Weed-killing robots use fewer pesticides on farms and food

It will really reduce herbicide loading, but if you really want to reduce herbicide inputs, design this thing to just pull the weed out, not give it a microdose of herbicide. Also, microdoses of herbicide may not be enough to prevent development of resistance. The dose will have to vary depending on the individual weed and the size of the weed.

Pulling the weed out takes a bit more energy than giving it an herbicide shot, so the weed pulling version might require more solar panels.

Another option is to use propane. A small flame can heat the fluids in the leaf to boiling, disrupting the cell walls and killing the plant. Several versions of that sort of use are current, and they work well if the weed is small. Larger weeds can withstand flame weeding.
