I could not agree more with using Bridge and Camera Raw. This has been my solution to being north of 50 and double learning the trick (file management) before the treat (Lightroom). Why Adobe has to have a parallel system to File Explored is the root of the problem. I would love to use Lightroom and still allow Windows to mange the edited pictures.
That's not exactly correct. Lightroom's catalog is not a parallel system. It is not a file browser. And this is where most people get stuck. They try to use it like a browser.
My wife is a database designer, and years ago she did a system for a non-profit. She went out and did training, got everyone up to speed with a small sample database.
A week later one of the trainees called for support, saying she couldn't get any of the nice reports that my wife had demonstrated during the training. My wife was perplexed, but she managed to ask the question, "where is the data?" The woman replied, "It's right here on my desk!" Which begged the question, "Did you input the data?" She replied no, she hadn't had time.
Clearly, there was a lack of understanding here. Thinking that LR is a parallel system to Windows Explorer is similar.
Bridge is also a browser, and not a parallel system either.
Once you "get" that a database is a catalog, you'll understand the relationship between the files, folders and previews. Imagine you get a catalog for clothing in the mail. But someone rearranged the pages, left out some put some others in that were not in the original catalog, but did not make a note of the changes in the index or table of contents. Well, this is exactly what happens when someone moves files around without syncing with Lightroom. Files cannot be found.
Lightrom is far better at managing image files than Explorer or Finder (Mac), as long as you understand how it works. I am "north" of 67 and been using LR since LR 3 - never lost a file or folder. And I move files around in and out of LR - but always sync if I move things around in Explorer.
