All great pics. I was leaning to #5 until I saw your first picture where you cropped #7.
They both fill all the boxes for me - lighting on subject, layers, contrast although the focal point is the butterfly, emotion.

For the very reason everyone picked #5 over #4. Obviously the same image, but if the butterfly is the subject, it needs to bigger. The butterfly in image #2 is too small and too similar in color and striations to the fern. In image #8 the butterfly is too small and kind of bland.
Like someone else said, cropping will help most of the images presented. I might eliminate the one facing left and casting a shadow on itself. I kind of like #1. But for a contest it might be too bland. Bright colors tend to catch the eye of most judges.

I scrolled through quickly the first time, and looked for the one that caught my eye. I think it was 3 as my first choice. I like the colors, the sharpness, the angle of your butterfly. I think I would also like 7, but (for me) it needs to be cropped more on the left side. There's too much "blank" space, but just my opinion.

Gorgeous!!! I was just out trying to get some photos of a Monarch, and it's not easy. I have a 105mm Nikkor macro I just got, so I'm cropping way down to see if I have anything decent. I bet I took 20 or more photos, and so far I like ONE!
