And a thank you for showing your copy rig.
I'm going to try that.

Trick is to keep everything level, camera and table. Tripod would be more stable on a hard floor, not carpet as mine was.

The pictures I am posting were taken when I was in Vietnam. I remember taking a lot of pictures but don't remember taking these exact shots. I think I had a Minolta camera back then and only took slides. I haven't looked at them in 50 years, main reason I didn't have a working projector or screen. I was talking to my brother and he was reproducing some old slides with a converter that he got cheep. He decided to get another one and sent it to me. Truthfully it was a piece of crap, images were less than tolerable. I decided to see what I could do with my DSLR and a makeshift light table. The last picture shows the set up. Slides were placed on a white translucent plexiglass and a speed light under it. Speed light was too strong even at its lowest setting so I placed toilet paper over the light. You are seeing the results. I'm not posting because of great pictures but I thought they might be interesting to some old vets that were over there.
Jim

BTW I was Army Engine repair and flew all over the country. After posting I noticed several could use a cleaner cropping, next time.
The pictures I am posting were taken when I was in... (show quote)

Nice shots Jim and thank you for your service.

Jim, the military would not take me (Air Force or Navy) so I never saw Vietnam in person, just via friends of mine that returned with thier photos and stories. For me these photos show what you saw when you were there and that is all that matters, my opinion. Thank you for sharing.

Greg

Thanks Greg, With the response I am getting I think I will get the slides out again and post more pictures.

All your photos are good but the one that impressed me the most is the sky-crane carrying the body of another helicopter. That sky crane had some intense lifting power.

Interesting setup. What’s the holder you’re using?
I’ve been thinking of trying something like this myself.

The holder came out of the machine my brother sent me, the only decent part. I liked it because I didn't have to deal with and light bouncing off the white edges of the slide. You could do the same kind of thing folding black paper over and cutting a slide window opening then inserting the slide. This gives you the ability to use live view on you camera and then just move the slide around to center up for the camera. Set your camera up on manual focus and you shouldn't need to re focus on each slide.

Having said all this first try without any holder and see if it works. I was using a macro lens 105mm and filled the frame with just the film, fit perfectly.

I did like working on the aircraft engines, that was fun getting them running again, but not much else was a "pleasure".

Nice photos. Would like to see more as you do them. Some places will look vaguely familiar; others certainly, most, in fact, won't. Many veterans have gone back and found the trip to be healing. I can not do it. Lou HM2 Hotel Co. 2nd Bn, 3rd Marines, 3rd MarDiv; and 3rd Med Bn. '69

Thank You for your service Lou

Yes, it did huge lifting power. It was, maybe still is called the "Jolly Green Giant", all engine in this configuration. Other times a box car looking thing is attached under it and it become a troop carrier.

Nothing good came out that war. Doctors said I am one affected by agent orange, Prostate cancer. Around a lot of aircraft that dropped the stuff. I think I am fine now, will keep getting checkups the rest of my life.

I hope the effects of agent orange are behind you and will never reappear. Welcome Home Brother.

Thank you for your service. That is an interesting setup for digitizing your slides. I recently found a whole carousel tray of slides that my dad took of some of our family vacations back in the 50's/60's. Amazingly, I also found some slides from about 1943, and can't believe how good the color is on most of them. I think I could actually try your method.
