I have a Nikon D5100. I can see the image in the viewfinder that I want to shoot but not on the monitor/screen unless I use Liveview. I can see images of photos I have taken but not when I'm trying to shoot. No problem taking photos it is just I can’t see it on the monitor. I did not use this camera for only couple of days and now this happen. Can someone from the UH family please advise? I sent Nikon an email but I know it will take a while to get a response from them. I will appreciate your expert advice. By the way, I’m a novice. Thanks.

Hey Doc ..... to view the picture you're going to take on the LCD you need to use live view .....

Thanks for your quick response... I used to see it on the monitor without being on liveview. I use liveview only when taking videos.

Do you mean when you take a shot and it shows up on the back screen? If so you might have preview off. You can turn it on and off in the menues. Having it off saves the battery a little.

LiveView is the same for both video and still. But most folks use the viewfinder for stills (more acccurate and less battery consumption).

Yes Erv that is what I mean, back screen. I didn't do anything to turn it off it just happen that way. But anyway, I will double check where in the menu I can turn it back to on. Thx

On another note, I can preview it after making a shot using the viewfinder. I just can't see it from the backscreen when trying to shoot. It seems like the preview wasn't turned off after al if I can preview it, right?. Maybe I have a different issue.

That must be some new thing with the D5100. I can not preveiw at any time through the veiwfinder. Once I take the shot the veiwfinder is back to the scene and ready to go again. If I look at the back screen the preveiw is there just for a second. But I can turn that part off to save one batteries if I have to. Then you just hit the preveiw button if you need to see it. I think that would bug me if I could see it through the veiwfinder every time. :) Now with live veiw, it is like a point and shoot. You just look at the back screen to frame the shot. But the veiwfinder is black because the mirror is up.

I've been using the back screen instead of the viewfinder for convenience because my eye is not that great. But I agree with you to save battery to use the viewfinder and to use the back screen to preview. I appreciate your efforts in trying to help me. I'm just wondering why suddenly this has happen without me making any changes on the camera. I read on other forum that says "it might be a sensor problem and to have it serviced under its warranty". Just wondering. I will also wait what Nikon says about this. I will upate you as soon as I hear from them. Thank you.

wonder if by accident , you pressed the disk while viewing. on the d5000 I can change view modes by pressing the circular disk top to change the view. Thats
the disk around the "OK" button . press the top of it to change views - -

Of course, live view doesn't work while the mirror is down.
So you can use either the view finder or live view, not both at the same time. Am I understanding you correctly? You're trying to use both at the same time? That doesn't work.

The "backscreen" you're referring to is called the LCD. Nikon calls it a "monitor," but the general term among photographers LCD. Using standard terminology will help members understand your problem. Point & Shoot cameras let you view and compose the image on the LCD, but the D5100 does not. Nikon made a big advance a few years ago, when they let the photographer compose using the LCD, and that is called live view. You activate that with the little lever on the top right (Lv). Live view is usually used only for video.

After you take a picture, the image is displayed briefly on the LCD. If you look at page 150 in your manual, you will see that you can use the Menu to control whether or not the image is displayed after being taken. Short of using live view, which really eats up the battery, you cannot compose using the LCD.

Thanks for all you kindness.. I have been using the LCD everytime I take still photos (from day 1) to check my subject before pressing the shutter. . Now, if I want to take videos I flip the lever(lv near the dial for M A S P, etc) for liveview. Sorry, maybe I'm not explaining well.
