I bought lightroom 4 but when i read the back when i got home it says it takes about 3gb. I only have 4gb on my laptop so now i am worried to install it. Will this really slow my computer down because i already have other stuff on my computer like photoshop 7. Would you buy another computer just for my photos and such or is there another option? Or should my computer handle this ok advise would be appreciated:)

Depending on the computer you have, it might not be very expensive to add more memory. Do you expect to be running PS and LR at the same time? If you get a new laptop, getting a lot of memory will be cheaper than adding it later.

If you do install it and then decide to get a different computer, be sure to deactivate (or uninstall) it so you can reinstall it on something else.

Hello Kurme,
I'm assuming that you are asking about available memory or Ram.
The Adobe site says that you can run Lightroom 4 in 2GB of Ram on a Windows 7 or Vista based PC. It will not run on XP without issues. It will be SLOW with 4gb but it will run. I have used Lightroom on a PC with Win7 and 4GB of Ram and didn't have any problems. But again, it was SLOW!
If your machine is older and XP based, I would look into upgrading to a newer machine. This time of year is the best for getting "back to school" bargains from the retailers.

I have my photos on a separate external hard drive that is small and sits on my desk I have 16000 photos at my disposal and it cost a hundred dollars that way you can probably regain some of your hardrive back and easily run both programs and it is very easy to plug and play and you can get it portable and take it with you to other computers

I don't believe that they are talking memory. They are saying 3G of space on hard drive. Plus there is no problem to ad memory to a laptop. I have done it on mine (apple laptop) memory is cheaper than buying new.
Plus I also have all photos on external.

Ah, yes - hard drive space.

Kurme, if your laptop has 4GB of hard drive space, and LR need 3GB, forget it. Sounds like it's time for a new machine.

It would be cheaper to get a bigger hard drive. All you have to do is create an image & recovery disk of your current hard drive then replace your old hard drive with a bigger one. Run the recovery disk then copy your system image on your new hard drive. Boom! you have a new computer for 1/4 of the price.

That's a very good idea, depending on the age and processor and memory in the old machine. Sometimes it's better to buy new than to refurbish the old. Sounds like time for a coin-flipping. :D

System requirements for Lightroom 4.0:

Windows

Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor
Microsoft® Windows Vista® with Service Pack 2 or Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1
2GB of RAM
1GB of available hard-disk space
1024x768 display
DVD-ROM drive
Internet connection required for Internet-based services*

You are originally correct... I think you will need more ram. Ram is really easy to install, you just have to be careful that you install the correct ram. What kind of computer/mother board do you have? I will help you find the ram.
