I also picked up a RavPower Filehub WD007 recently and have tested it for a European trip coming up. I also have the WD wireless Pro. My plan is to use both on each SD card so I will have 2 backups on different devices. I am not bringing a laptop or PC tablet.

On the RavPower, I didn't even use my phone or the utility to transfer from the SD card in the slot to a plugged in portable hard drive. I simply powered up, pushed the button on the side marked "SD to USB" and it transferred the entire photo folder over. The Wireless Pro also transferred perfectly. I have run multiple tests on both to make sure it is doing backup correctly and so far, so good. Took a few 1/2 to 3/4 full 32gb cards from previous shoots and they transferred in a few minutes, wasn't clocking the download.

So between the SD cards, the portable hard drive with the Rav, WD Wireless Pro and the CF cards (cameras have CF and SD slots), I am good on my daily backups. I have plenty of both types of cards for the trip to shoot raw files and not have to erase anything, so hopefully everything goes as planned.

Thanks jdubu for your reply. Good to hear good feedback of the new devices, I will consider them :)
I was asking about the WD001 as is the one I have already (although still haven't located it after a move), and the new ones are not easily (even less cheaply) available where I live.

I am also seeing options using a Raspberry Pi, mainly aiming to have more control/verification that the backups are done 100% and with no errors. I have trust issues with these devices that you press a single button and all the transfer is transparent to the user.

Thanks again an please come back with more feedback once you come back from your trip. Enjoy it!

Hey Safeman, the problem with SD cards is that they can fail. Not often (I've taken 10s of thousands of photos without a failure) but they do fail. And you can lose them. Or inadvertently leave them in your shirt pocket when you put them in the laundry hamper. If your camera has dual slots and you can save your photos to both slots that gives you a backup. Otherwise most folks want a second copy or a third. Once I get home my cards are backed up to three or four different places on different disks at home as well as to the cloud. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that Murphy isn't out to get you.

My card reader is a USB 3.1 and i was amazed how fast it all went. I also tried copying fron one sd card to another on the same card reader and rhat was fast too . Can you believe the Note9 will support 1 terabyte of memory !!

I received the device, a Cable Matters USB 3.1 Type C Card Reader. It can read an SD and a Micro SD card. I connected it to my Note 8 and inserted the 128GB card from my D7500. I transferred 88 files (mix of large JPEG and full sized NEF files) in about 30 seconds. Wow, Speedy. I love this device and only $12.

What I found really interesting is that I can view the NEF files as pictures on my Note 8 and play with them using Adobe Photoshop Express.

I'm going on a tour to Israel and plan on taking lots of photos. I want to be able to backup files from a sd card (in a reader) directly to a ssd without using a computer, tablet, phone etc. Has anybody done this and if so, what ssd did you use?

I just found out this device that may be exactly what you are looking for - "XferMax by DUZUINFO"

As I understand that you just insert SD, XQD or CF card to backup to this device - you have to buy your own SSD. They only supply this device without HHD or SSD.
Here is the link - http://www.dazuinfo.com/specification.html

I have not use it so do not know the performance.

I did some quick testing and discovered that any changes you make with PE it will save as a jpeg. Your original is untouched. I did a crop with some other changes and was rewarded with a high quality jpeg. You can set the software to use whatever quality jpeg you wish. This is really neat. And free.

Thanks for prompting me to do these tests and stuff. I love my little $12 card reader and will be using this as my field backup method for my D7500 from now on. I will also be able to provide custom jpegs to people, on the spot, so to speak.

One more test to do, use my OTG cable to connect my Note 8 directly to my D7500 and transfer files.

Did some more testing with the OTG cable and a regular USB cable connected to the D7500. When I connect it together, the Note 8 will prompt to ask what to do with respect to the USB device connected. If you select Transfer Files, it fires up something called Camera Importer. This scans your camera and presents the images it finds there sorted by date. If you click on a specific date, it selects all the images for that date. Next you click Import and they all come to your smartphone, very quickly. I imported 7 jpegs (13mb each) in about 3 seconds. There will be a new folder created in the internal storage, in my case it's called D7500 and the pictures are all in there. I tested with RAW files and it imports those as well.

I'm now doing further tests to see if I can change the location of the folder to the SD card in my Note 8 instead of internal storage.

Well, I discovered that Camera Importer is part of Google Photos. I did not discover where I could change the target storage location. Since I don't use Google Photos, I uninstalled it. The next time I connected my D7500 to my Note 8 via the OTG cable, it prompted me for an application to use. I selected Downloads. Now when I connect via OTG or if already connected, I just drop down the menu from the top and click on the line that says USB- tap to chose. Then tap on File Transfer.

I notice that it's slower copying directly to the SD-storage on the Note 8 compared to Internal Memory; perhaps I need a faster on-board SD-card, but for now, I have 2 ways to more images from my D7500 to my Note 8. I would think these methods would work for other smartphones with large storage capacity.
