I have a Nikon D7200 and am considering upgrading the Nikon 18-180 lense. I want to shoot some star trails and night photography and am considering the Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F . Do you recommend this lense.

I also want to upgrade to a more a lense with more zooming power on the high end for willdlife and everyday use.... For that I am considering the
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 ED VR
. Do you recomment this lense?

I am retired and can only afford this onetime upgrade due to a settlement I recieved therefore these will probably be my only time I will be able to upgrade to these. Is there something else you would recommend besides these? As I said I am just dabbing into Startrails and night photography and also love landscapes and wildlife.

If this is a one-time deal, take your time. Consider refurbished for savings. Use your current lens to attempt the photography you want to do. Look at the results and determine where it is falling short. Then you will have better information to make a choice.

You should take a good look at the Tamron 18-400. Great lens.

I have used a Sigma DG 150-500 mm lens on my Nikon D7000 for several years and like it very much. However, I do not know whether or not this lens is still available or is compatible with your camera.

I am sure you were referring to the 18-140 lens which, from what I know, happens to be an excellent and sharp all around lens.
I have never used the Tokina lens but all the reviews I have seen consider that lens as a great optic and obviously very capable for the type of photography you have in mind.
The 18-300 could be slow for wildlife photography. The 70-300 VR would be my first choice as an affordable and sharp lens. If you could afford it the 80-400 VR is a great lens for action and wildlife photography.
Because I have never used the 18-300 I have to assume the AF will be better with the 70-300 which is pretty fast but this is only my personal opinion. In good light the 18-300 could be acceptable if the AF performs well.
Keep the 18-140 as a walk around lens unless you go for the 18-300.

I have the D7200 with the 18-140 and it is my walk around lens and has all the sharpness you would need. More zoom will
really help though, the Tamron 18-400 gets great reviews as well. I also have the Tokina 11-16 and it works excellent for
Milky Way and night photography. I use it a lot more than I thought I would, it's great for automotive pictures as well,
I like the effect it gives me.

The Nikon 18-140 is without doubt the best kit lens ever made.

I don't know about the lens but I tend to shy away from lens with such a wide zoom range.

All these medium wide angle zooms are going to be in th f/3.5 to f/4.0 range wide open, so they all would do night photography pretty much the same. For you, please look at the Tamron 18-400 mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD for Nikon.

If you want a detailed star trails workflow, DM me.

Have fun.

Rgrenaderphoto, Went to your website and love the astrophotography. Would you recommend the Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for that? or would I be able to do that with the 18-400 Tamron also?

I can speak on the Nikor af-s 70-300 4.5-5.6 ED VR G. I have it on my entry level D3400 and am very pleased with the results. Even with my limited (vs d7200) AF system, I find it fast enough and with enough reach to do most outdoor sports and urban birding including BIF. When I eventually upgrade to the D7200 I am expecting even better results. If this is a lens you are interested in, look for a used copy. I got mine for $314 from Roberts Camera in Indianapolis, but I have seen it at several reputable used equipement dealers in the same price range.

I highly recommend the Tamron 18-400 mm lens. Since buying one for my D7100, I seldom use any other of my lenses. It is now my "walking around lens".

Hi Dino, I've got the Nikkor 18-300. It is ok as a general lens and I use it extensively - well it's the only lens I've got (apart from the kit lens 18-55).It is not as sharp as I like it to be but have taken decent photos of star trails, BIF, fireworks with the Nikon D3300. Now that I've upgraded to the D7500, I'd like to get a lens with a longer focal length, e.g. Tamron 150-600 but the weight is putting me off. My friend has a Nikkor 70-300 6.3 ED VR and it seems sharper (and cheaper) than mine. I chose the 18-300 as didn't want to keep changing lenses and carrying two. Good luck...Grace

Personally, I wouldn't put anything but a Nikkor lens on any Nikon camera. This decision comes from information I learned at a seminar.
