I've searched the archives for "battery grip for nikon d5100" and found a few threads, but none seemed to reach a consensus. Which 3rd-party battery grip do most consider the "best" or "best value"? I'd like to be able to use the vertical shutter release on the grip without needing an external cable, but that probably won't be possible, considering what I've seen so far. Other than that, I'm looking for one that works and fits well and has decent build quality. I'd buy a Nikon grip in a heartbeat if they made one.
Any suggestions?

Yeah, I saw that one. It's a counterfeit. Thanks anyway, though.

It says OEM. How can they say that and have a Nikon box? That's just not right.

I was taken in by that box, too. It's funny. We accept the fact that the Chinese can duplicate products made by Nikon and Canon, but when we see that gold box - it must be a Nikon.
The Chinese have mastered cardboard box construction! What's next?
When I did a search, the only product that came up for the D5100 grip was that item on ebay. It has to be a fraud.
Having said all that, there are many satisfied customers using Chinese grips.

Hi Jerry
I am on another site that is just for Nikon usesers. There is a lot of folks that say the after market grips screw up their cameras. I see it on the site all the time. And Nikon voids the warnenty on your camera too. It is kind of sad that they can't make one for the folks that want them. But I guess that is big busness. I have the Nikon grip for my D300s and love it. Seems to make the camera more stable for me. But it gets heive after awhile.

I don't need a grip, but if I were to get one, I'd get the Nikon. There's just too much interaction with the camera to take a chance on someone else's version.

That's the thing about this thread...Nikon doesn't make one for the 5100.

But they did a nice job of copying the box, didn't they? They even gave it an appropriate Nikon name.

Great at copying things, yes.
Kind of scary.
You have to realize that the Chinese don't honor patents or copyright. Even among their selves. A big for instance would be the electric two wheeled scooters you see on college campuses. Thought lower quality then the few built in the US (Goped) or Europe there are some with merit. At the same time an identical looking scooter from China will suffer from poorly welded frames and parts assembled back wards out of the box along with bad electronics. You will find however that many of the OEM accessories for your cameras are molded and assembled in China. Many third party items are popped out of the same molds. I had a third party grip for my 1Ti that could not be discerned from the OEM grip including the phosphor bronze contacts. Thought all lithium batteries come from China I have learned to stay away from the two for $15 offered on Ebay
