Given the major hype, has anyone wondered by these new bodies carry the Z6 and Z7 nomenclature? Does anyone know why?
Only the Shadow knows!!!
This was touched on in another thread today with no answer. I did like the idea I read in a couple of places that if you are shooting in portrait mode the Z on the front of the camera will look like an N

My guess they call it Z7 to compete head on with A7-series that Sony offers

I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense. Maybe the Z8 & Z9 will have two card slots, AS WELL AS OTHER IMPROVEMENTS.
Maybe it's supposed to be the last word in MILC.
Perhaps it’s a marketing ploy. If the bodies were named Z1, it is possible that potential buyers would want a more advanced/developed model. Thus, skip a number of iterations and voila, we have Z6 and Z7.
6 and 7 years since mirrorless arrived or 6 to 7 years behind Sony? Sorry Nikon Users! If I wasn't shooting Canon the D850 is a Great Camera!

Probably. Canon calls thiers that M series. They have an M5 and an M6 now. Probably going to call the full frame model the M7 would be my guess. LOL

For the same reason Nikon called their SLRs F3, F4, F5; and their DSLRS D100, D500, D850, etc!
It is my understanding that Nikon calls the new lens mount Z type.

I hope they never change the new mount. They'd be lost finding a name.

Z6 and Z7 are after D5
And D came after F
F for film
D for digital
Z for ... ??? Maybe Nikon will have a contest to determine what Z stands for. Sideways N was already suggested by a few folks.
