Can anyone confirm ID of this spider?

I found this guy in our garden. About 1.5 in. body and leg span of about 2.5 in. I looked it up in one reference book and had it as Yellow and Black garden spider (pretty creative). Also said it was an orb weaver. It has an elaborate web including a zig-zag pattern in the center. Can anyone confirm?

Yes. It's an Argiope. I also have a pretty good photo of one that hung around our deck in NC.

Yes, Black and Yellow Garden Spider, AKA B&Y Argiope (Argiope Aurantis). The zigzag pattern is often called a zipper.

What is the purpose of the zipper? Does it capture more bugs for dinner?

Yes, that's what they are mostly called, they are also known as Argiope spiders!

I don't know but did some Googling. The purpose is unknown, but there are a couple of possibilities discussed here, in the 3rd paragraph under the Habitat section:

I don't think spiders carry ID.
