Recently someone posted requesting opinions on this lens. I own a copy and gave a negative opinion which I now regret. There were some vey positive responses so I gave the fella another go last weekend.

Got some good results, realised that this lens needs really good light to impress. Why did I expect more at 6.3? I put it down to insanity. You’ve got 400mm in a lens that is easy to hand hold and will not drive you to bankruptcy. Obviously it has limitations but it seems to deliver well within those.

My apologies to Tamron. Also I have decided to keep this lens, I’m sure Tamron will be very relieved !!!

My experience has been the same. You do need really good light to get good results- I get the best results with bright defused light.

Bright diffused light was exactly what I had when using the lens last weekend.

I’ve said before and I will say it again, Tamron has become Premier lens company in The world . They offer great products at prices more of us can afford.

Raise the ISO speed and for hand held shooting VR should be good enough. I do not own the lens, these are only guidelines.
Lenses do their part when we do ours.

You could always get a Canon f\4 lens for 6900.00 and get two more stops of light at $3000 per stop. I'll pass. When I make serious money with photography, I'll do that. (That means never)

So how does light-gathering on the Tamron at 6.3 compare to what one can achieve with a 5.6, ie Nikon 200-500 or 80-400? 1-stop difference here. Would these or other 5.6/6.3 lenses have the same difficulties or challenges?

When the light goes dim I pull out my Nikon 70-300 AF-P f 4.5-5.6 lens. There is a significant difference in performance- especially in focusing speed and accuracy. Now if only the Nikon zoomed out to 400 mm... I was hoping that Nikon would offer a light weight 400 mm lens but looks like they opted for the 500 mm focal length instead. But at a weight of 3 # it certainly is worth considering. That's only 8 ounces more than the Tamron. Hmm...

I tried out a Tamron 100-400. Yes, for the money, a fine lens. But the Canon 'L' series beat it out in a side-by-side comparison, if just by a bit. I decided that spending more than twice as much for that little extra was worth it. You'll have to decide this for yourself.

Ken the "angry photographer" praises this lens but poo-pooed the 150-600mm G2....I didn't listen to him and got the latter since I thought the extra 200mm would be useful for birding - very happy with it although a bit heavier than the 100-400 which I don't have. The 100-400 is a great value as is the 150-600mm G2. Yes at f/6.3 either one is basically a "sunny day" lens.

Tamron has been making some winners lately.
