Lightroom to Elements for editing

I finally bit the bullet and bought Lightroom. I do have a question about it for the LR experts. I am sure I will have more but for starters:

Is there a way to set up LR to go straight to Elements for editing? I see the link to go to Photoshop suite but nothing to transfer to Elements. I know I can export the photo then open it in Elements but am hoping for an easier way.

in Lightroom Edit > Preferences
Open third tab "External Editing"
There are two areas, one of which will show Photoshop, goto the second area and select "Choose"
navigate to PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
Select and "Open" or "OK"
Close preferences
When you right click on a picture, select Edit and you then will have the choice.

Thank you, it is done! I was already using this for a couple of plug-ins fom Topaz and didn't realize I could use it for more than one.

I appreaciate your quick responce.

One thing to remember if you are sending photos to Elements and back to LR - Elements only works with 8 bit files (unless this has changed in the latest version). When you get your file back into LR, it will be 8 bit depth, not 16. Better to do your processing in LR only. I use LR for my initial processing and only use Photoshop for HDR or pixel-based processing (clone, etc.) and then finish and export from LR, but PS works with 16 bit.

I exported a photo over to PSE10 for editing. Yes, you are limited to the editing you can do in PSE but I did do a couple of things. I then saved it as a copy as a tif, I could of saved it as a psd also if I ha chose to. I then inported it back into Lightroom. How can I tell if it is 8 bit or 16 bit now?

I think it is still a 16 bit but don't know how to tell for sure.

UPDATE: I just checked the copy in PSE10. When I saved it as a tif it did save it as a 16 bit file so I know now that is possible. PSE10, as was mentioned, does limit a many things but some things can be done with 16 bit files. A couple of the auto features under Enchance do not work and about half of the filters are not available. You can no longer use layers with 16 bit.

I agree that you are better off editing in LR if possible but I feel the PSE10 handles some things better.

It is nice to know I can still do a lot of things in PSE10.

You seem to know what you're talking about, so I'll ask you a LR question.

I recently installed LR4. Whenever I connect anything with photographs to my computer, LR opens up. I'm sure there's a simple way to stop it from opening, but I'm too lazy to look for it. I use Win7. By default, Irfanview is set to open my jpg files. LR is not listed as the default program for anything.

Jerry,

When I first installed LR as a trial version I had the same problem. When ever I connected a memory card LR would pop up and I had to tell it I wanted to try it or quit. Now that I purchased LR that no longer happens. If I want to use LR I have to start it like any other program. I did try to disable it when it was doing that but could not figure out how.

One place I did not look so you might want to check this. Under programs click "default programs". The second item down on this is "Asociate a file type with a program". A list of file extensions comes up. Check them and if LR is the chosen program change it to what you want.

Outside of that I dont know what to tell you. Are you still using LR under the 30 day trial? If not the other thing to do is uninstall the program. When I bought the program as a download I had to download it again anyhow to get the licence So it makes no sense to leave it on your computer if you are not using it or going to buy it at a later date.

I checked Default Programs, and it is not listed anywhere. I'll play around with it later. I have to do some yard work today.

Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type

Find and select the file type causing the bother - such as "jpg"

When selected the name in the column headed "Default Program" is the application currenty opening the picture. Click on "Change Program" and choose the preferred program. (such as Irfanview). If your preferred applic. is not shown, then browse to the (say) Irfanview exe file and click OK. close all open windows then double click on a jpg photo and it should open in Irfanview rather than Lightroom.

Thanks, but that wasn't the problem. It was LR itself. I made a separate post.

Not necessarily. When there is a jpg, LR would open. That would make you think that LR was the default for jpgs.

Jerry,

Thanks for finding that. My trial version opened any time i loaded a memory card but it stopped when I purchased LR. I wanted it to open with a card. I checked the box and it now works the way I want it to.
