I don't know if this is possible but would it be possible to re-assign the AF mode push button (around the lower left AF/MF switch facing the VF on the D7200) to let's say a button the the right side - the red dot movie record button for example? I want to be able to quickly change AF mode and areas with the thumb wheels (AF-S, AF-C, Auto, S, etc) using the right hand - will make it less clumsy and quicker with a large lens hand held. I checked the manual but no mention of this button in the customization menus. Please note I am not referring to back button AF....I know about that. Any thoughts or workarounds? Thanks...

If you go in to the Menu>Custom Setting Menu>f Controls>f2, f3 & f4 you will see which buttons can be assigned and what they can be assigned to. I don't believe any button not listed can be reassigned and I don't believe any assignment option not listed will be available.

I think Mac is correct another alternative could be user 1 and user 2 set ups

I am afraid he is... yes U1 and U2 could work for the 2 most common settings - one for a stationary subject (AF-S) and the other for in motion (AF-C).
On my D500, I was able to assign Mode (program, aperture priority, shutter priority, manual) to the movie record button. I'm not sure if I could have assigned AF-mode to that button. Check out f:Controls in the menu.

I believe that is one of the benefits of "back button" focus ... no need to switch between AF-S or AF-C.
Yes, this is an old post before I learned about BBF, and I do like the concept and use it, however Nikon needs to place the AE-L/AF-L button closer to the right as I find I am stretching my thumb while my hand is around the deep grip. Moving/adding the AF mode button to the back or top grip would help too.

Aha ... had not realized it was from Aug 2018.
Wonder why it showed up top of the forum this morning.
I use 7200 also.
The AE-L/AF-L button was uncomfortable to get to because I'm a left eye shooter.
So I assigned BBF to Pv button on front that falls directly under my middle finger.
