Hi, I would like to know if my camera or my lens is bad it won't auto focus. Is the motor in the lens or the camera? Thanks for the help. Joe PS do i need to call Nikon?
We need more information.
What model body and lens?
Some bodies have a focusing motor, some lenses don’t.

With out knowing more than what you have posted. The first thing you should do is clean the contacts on the lens and camera. Then see if it auto focuses. But saying my camera is a Nikon and won’t auto focus really is not enough information to go on.

Seriously, Dude. Can you tell me what camera and lens I was using yesterday? Then what makes you think any of us can do so for you?
Is the motor in the lens or the camera?
The best answer with the information provided so far is ... YES!

If it is a full frame camera(FX), motor is in the body, a Crop Senior Camera motor is in the lens.(DX)
Joe,
In Nikons depends on 1. Camera type if it has the capability of running a screw type lens focus or lens with internal motor. Thus we need model of camera.
2. The lens could be a screw type, internal motor type or original manual focus type also. So please add lens model also.
With this everyone here will be better able to answer and help you on this question.
Best of regards

They’re both bad! You need a Leica S.
If you have any other AF lens and it works it is the camera. If you do not have any other lens and no way to fit an AF lens in your camera then it is time to call Nikon.
Simply check to make sure the AF feature of the lens is on in your lens.

That is far from accurate. Many DX cameras have built in motors.
Could be you had a senior moment.

Both the D300 and the AF-S 18-200 have motors. As others have said, clean contacts in both.
That lens has its own AF silent wave motor. Sometimes the easiest things can get overlooked, the camera battery is charged, the switch on the lens is set to M/A and the lever on the body is set to AF? If all are yes, see if another lens will AF. If the other lens does AF then you have your answer. Might also want to see if the lens will focus in LV (Live View).
If you want to talk to Nikon, you can go to their website support and have an online chat with a customer service rep. They should be able to help you narrow it down. BTW, Nikon support can be hit and miss.
What do you use to clean the contacts with? Just plain alcohol?
Is the lens set to autofocus rather than manual?
