Baldwin C-18 2-8-0 Number 315

fredpnm Loc: Corrales, NM

The Baldwin Consolidation type (C-18) currently located in Chama, NM at the Cumbres & Toltec RR. Built-in 1895 it still operates, on occasion, from the Chama station, on special occasions. It's on loan from the Durango/Silverton RR. Note the number board above the headlight...number 463, which is the C&TRR in-service K-27 locomotive. Not sure what the story is on that...

Beautiful little engine. The steam and sand domes are huge.

Nice shot Fred. I've been hoping someone would post one of that display. One correction though, the engine is on loan from the Durango Railroad Historical Society. http://www.drhs315.org/ Though similar in name they are not part of the D&S.
and for what it's worth, I doubt Al Harper would ever 'loan' anything

A great shot that brings back memories a ride on that combo - 1950 - from Spokane,WA to Wallace, ID - 85 miles & 8 hours - yes 8 hours - with that mail/ RR Express car they stopped quite often -

Thanks for the correction Rich...in that...I stand corrected. I'm hoping Pat can tell us something about why 463's number is on the light boards. I wonder, given the fire along the D&SRR line, if Al wouldn't want to give away his fire-breathing steam locomotives. Seems there are those who think his locomotives started the fire.

On Sept 24 another charter special will be run recreating a pre WW I train using that set up. The engine will be renumbered to 425 which is the number she wore when first delivered to the D&RG RR. The head light on it now is a recreation of a ‘Wabash’ headlamp from that time period. I believe that headlamp was last used on 463 for a special, hence the number which of course will be changed. The headlamp she usually has mounted can be seen here
