Can someone identify this hawk? It was flying near Hotchkiss, Colorado.
I don't know what kind of hawk it is, but I love that he is looking at us. Excellent shot.
Gorgeous bird, whatever he is.
Looks like a Peregrine Falcon. from here.
A young Swainson's hawk..
Nice shot whatever species he is.
Beautiful. Try Merlin for identification.
I have a lot of trouble with hawks because they have light, dark, and everything in between color phases. Through in immatures and you have more combinations. I can't quite see if this bird has a white chin but based on what I see, especially the dark patagials (front of the wing), my guess would be an immature western Red-tailed Hawk.
Pretender, I know it is a hawk not a falcon. Because it is an immature hawk it is difficult for me to identify. Thank you for your response.
jwm44, Thank you for your reply. I thought it might be a Swainson's hawk but it just doesn't fit any of the id's I have.
Jeff D, A Merlin is a falcon, is it not. This is definitely a hawk. Thank you for your response.
Thanks AKRetiree,
Okay, I can accept that. Maybe I'll see it again next year and have better colorings. Lots of Prairie Dogs for food in this area.
I forgot to say the the coloring below the head is tan-ish.
Shellback,
Are you agreeing with jwm 1944, that it is a young Swainson's? I may get another chance to photograph it next year and will post it if.
