Hello fellow Photographers, I just purchased a Nikon D850, I bought a 28-300 lens with it-what does everyone recommend for my next lens? I do a little of everything -landscape - flowers- some people (no Portraits') just a little variety of everything- I live in Colorado so landscape and mountain scenery a lot
For most of the photos I have seen here of Colorado residents, you don't need more lenses, unless you do any wildlife. 28mm gets most of the landscapes and 300 gets the reach you need for the distance shots. You will take most of your photos at around 35-60mm. Spend your money on fuel, lodging and food. Very nice camera. I am not sure how good the 28-300 is since I am not familiar with it, but it had better be good to match the camera's abilities.
The 28-300 is a big compromise lens on the 850 ! - you NEED a very high quality 24-70mm for serious work.
..
Thank you for the input, Ill we probably purchase that one this weekend, any more suggestions?

I have a 28-300 and it gets used a lot for casual photos. Family stuff, mostly. At f/5.6 I tend to use it outdoors mostly.
I have a 24-70 f/2.8 E VR and it gets used a lot for stuff that I want as sharp as I can get it and for indoor work. It's a good range for most work, and I supplement it with the 70-200 f/2.8 E VR. Both high IQ and good VR for low light work. The new 24-70 and 70-200 are pricey but they're worth it to me.
First thing I'd add is a nifty fifty, 1.8 or faster
I'll look at the 70-200 today too, I used to shoot weddings but, no more of that hassle I like the versatility of the 28-300 I'll buy the 24-70 for sure
never thought of that, but you're correct

Going past a 24-70, a lot depends on what you want to shoot - but in general, I would be looking at a FAST/sharp prime with great bokeh - like the 105 f1.4 either Nikon or, (save money) SIGMA.
..
I shoot the canon but use the 28-300 as my walking around lens... gets me the shot I want but not the best IQ. I have a 24-70 2.8 that gets super quality shots and a 70-200 2.8 that does the same. BUT, toting both of them around all day is a choir. However, when I know I'm looking to make prints of the photos I'm taking, I lug them around and get the superior images they provide.

Use your 28-300mm. It will tell you what to get next.

16-35mm or 17-35mm would be ideal for those purposes.
Depending upon what's available, an f/4 lens is generally fine... bigger, heavier and more expensive f/2.8 and faster aren't usually necessary unless you're shooting at night or sports or photojournalism.
For scenics, you'll probably be stopping down to smaller apertures for greater depth of field, anyway.
Don't purchase a new lens until you master what you have. Give it time. Learn what lengths you end up actually shooting. Find out what limits you are running up against. You need to match new equipment to your photography. If you just buy equipment, you will be matching your photography to the equipment.
I have most of the Nikon lenses previously talked about and all of them are good. You asked what your next purchase might be. My suggestion would be Nikon 105mm f/2.8 about half the price of the f/1.4. I have the D850 and use this lens a bunch. Use it all the time for flowers, low light or day light, with or without strobes or flashes. I sometime add extension tubes for macro work with flowers and such. You can also use it for people but will have to step back to get everything in the picture. Several people have beat up the 28-300 lens here on the Hog and I just don't see that big of a problem. As a walk around lens I don't think you can beat it. People can argue all day long and I still won't side with them, maybe they have bad copies, no telling. I still say this while having the 3 top lenses Nikon makes, 14-24, 24-70 & the 70-200, all f/2.8. When you go out, only want to carry one lens and not sure what you will be taking, the 28-300 is my go to lens.
