With the new Nikon 500 MM F5.6 PF lens hitting the market, (B & H, Adorama and others are taking pre-orders) I'm wondering how many photographers will now "dump" their monster 500 F 4's on the market. I've seen prevues of the new lens and for around $3600.00, I WANT ONE. But I'm willing to check out recent 500 MM F4 models if the price is right. But seriously, the new 500 is so much smaller, lighter and cheaper than the big monsters it replaces. This will be interesting.

No, it’s an F Mount for thier DSLR range. You need the adapter to mount it on the Mirrorless model.

I still think Nikon missed the boat by not making the 300 PF a 400 f4 PF ! - So, now, Nikon STILL does not have an affordable/carryable 400mm !!!

Agreed! A lightweight 400 F/4 is the sweet spot but they keep missing it.

The extra stop is significant and if people understand why the purchased the 500 F/4 in the first place, they would look at this lens more of an addition rather than a replacement. So, I don't think you'll see a bunch up for sale...

BTW - here's an article I did on why fast glass matters:

I rather like my 200-500 f/5.6. Much cheaper, too.

There is a huge difference in price, but I'm sure this lens focuses faster, is sharper, and probably has better weather sealing as well. In addition, it also has the function buttons, allowing you to do a variety of things (I use them for focus distance memory all the time on my 600 F/4).

I've read that the concentric ridges in a phase fresnel lens can cause some weird flare. I've never shot with one so I don't know first had. I noticed that Nikon Capture NX-D has a PF Flare control feature.

Yes, you are wrong, its standard F mount.

I pre-ordered one last night. Smaller and lighter than the 200-500mm F5.6, pro build quality, weather sealed at $3599. Its the perfect mate for my 200-400mm F4 and 600mm F4 for the upcoming photo expedition. I would own the 200-500 in a split second if it were weather sealed, but its not so no go for me.

I've shot the 300 PF a LOT and have never had any flare issues, even with backlit subjects. I think all the stars have to line up for there to be an issue.

For the new mirrorless cameras (2 models) there is an adaptor, the Nikon FTZ Mount Adapter that will adapt all your Nikkor F mount lenses to the new camera bodies. B & H is selling them (pre-order) for $249.95.
