What did Benjamin Franklin say? "Penny wise and Pound foolish?"

I don't understand why someone would by a $3300 camera and use it with a $19 strap. Or a $100 tripod for that matter.

Thanks. I have some decent backup equipment. I see you're also from DE. I'm just north of the canal in Bear.

Newport here. Enjoyed your ice storm shots from the spring.

Yeah, long ago I bought a faux Black Rapids strap and quickly trained myself to tighten the mounting screw every time I used the thing... but I did the checking by "feel" and apparently, that was foolish. Instead of the screw backing out, the clip that attaches to the mounting screw wore through. I was very surprised when, one day, my camera simply dropped (onto grassy patch). I was more surprised to see the amount of wear and tear on the clip... surprised, that is, that I failed to notice the rapid and substantial wear on such an important failure point. I use BR now... the REAL BR...

Actually, there is no evidence Franklin ever said it. The phrase was coined by Robert Burton in England in the early 1600's.

Actually, it was first written in Francis Meres' Luis de Granada's Sinners Guyde, in 1598.

"Least he (as it is wont to be sayd) be penny wise and pound foolish, least he I say, gather ashes, and cast away flower."

I just finished filling out the repair order to send my 3 month old D850 and my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 for repair. The camera no longer focuses properly with any lens and the lens has a loose mount and some stripped screw threads. It only fell from about 18".
I was using an Altura shoulder strap that screws into the tripod screw hole and it let go when I picked up the camera by the strap. The strap is in the garbage now. I am posting this to hopefully prevent someone else from going through this experience. If you have any screw in type strap without a backup tether - get a replacement before your next camera use.

Hopefully I will have both back in a few weeks working properly.

I use the Black Rapid strap along with the Black Rapid quick release plate with never a problem of the combo working loose. I also made a tether strap as a safeguard but they can be purchased online for anyone needing one. Sorry for your mishap, but look at it as a learning episode, knock off products are seldom as reliable as OEM products.

Did he also say; if you don't have some nice to say ...shut up??? Did it make you feel better when you demeaned the OP??

Too bad. I've never had a strap failure and hopefully never will. I hope you have plenty of money for those repairs. They are going to be expensive. (:

Hell, the part that screws into the camera costs $20 just by itself. Now they may be overpriced, but 6 yrs without a mishap has to count for something.

I bought that part for my Sun Sniper strap and it never unscrews by itself.

It doesn't matter. It was his choice. Not yours.

I think I’ll take your advice and throw out the strap that failed on me. I now use an Op-tech strap on one DSLR camera and a Black Rapid on the other. My mirrorless has a Lite Peak Design strap on it.

I too started out with a screwin strap, but I was so paranoid that the camera would work itself off the screw that I switched to a BosStrap that attaches to the strap lugs at the side s of the camera. POM!

Sincerely very sorry that this happened to your gear. Are the tripod screw-in threads still intact ok on the bottom of the camera? Have you tried attaching your tripod and does the connection look solid? What I’m driving at is whether the screw just worked it’s way out or whether, in your view, the hole somehow failed to hold the screw.

Great point several years ago while sitting on my I took my 750 w a24-70 lens off my shoulder and held the strap with my hand the camera dangled about 8” off the floor while sitting. Suddenly I heard the clunk and my heart stopped fortunately no damage. The tripod mount came loose I think by spinning around because there were no signs of a failed thread. Since the I am constantly checking the screw mount I do mean checking every couple of shots

Curious as to what UHHers think of this strap:

I have it for use with a heavy lens, but I like the Optec and Peak Design systems for everyday stuff, as they are lighter and have a lot of versatility. The PD wrist strap is awesome and I actually have it attached too. I love being able to switch from shoulder to wrist strap in a flash (no pun intended).

I also prefer the security of the lug mounted straps, but the CarrySpeed does have the second attachment point in addition to the tripod mount (which I attach to the lens ring instead of the camera).

I've never had a strap failure either but then again I use spider holsters. I digress, I also use hand straps. With those, I always have my hand on the camera and when I don't, the camera is in the holster...
