This shows how to tell the difference. Top one is a Viceroy Butterfly. Bottom is a Monarch. The most notable sign is the Viceroy has lines across the bottom wings. The Monarch does not. Took both these at the same area last week.
I also just recently learned that the monarchs with the two spots on their lower wings- like your fine image- are the males. The females do not have the spots
Good captures and a great illustration of the classic textbook example of protective mimicry. The Monarch's diet of extremely bitter Milkweed makes them unpalatable to birds. The Viceroy has a different diet and would taste just fine but birds have learned to stay away from that color pattern.
