I guess you used a texture/sharpening filter Matt. You can almost feel those rock surfaces in your edit.

I'd say so RG. You really kicked up you heels this time. One of my dilemmas when working on this, was how light to allow the rock face to be, and still look natural. After all it was pretty late in the day and all in shadow. It looks like you used a flash. :0

I am amazed at how many colors and all of the beautiful foliage that is hidden in the jumbo rocks! I just didn't expect all of that beauty!

The rocks have a wide range of colors depending on the time of day. The early morning colors are especially nice and seem to glow with peachy to orange flavors of russet, especially striking against a blue sky. Jumbo Rocks is the name given to a particular area within the Joshua Tree Park. Probably my favorite, because it just seems to keep going. Further explorations revealing one astonishing scene after another.
The geology is particularly interesting to me. All the rock forms are solidified lava that failed to reach the surface. Therefore the bubble like and extruded forms in granite.

Ponder indeed. I appreciate that you chose to give this image a whirl. I well remember an image you posted titled "An experiment in Red". I thought then, and still do, this guy has crazy skills. Not to mention severe artistic talent. Enjoyed the pondering.

Interesting info about this area of the country. Its been many, many years since I have been southwest. Seems an artist's/ photographer's paradise!
