Soo yesterday I was at the Lynden fair watching the Horse jumping and Barrell racing. As always I had my camera and figured this would be a good time to practice at some action shots. As I proceeded to take a shot this guy comes up and grabs my camera and proceeds to be a jerk toward me for taking photos. There were no signs posted saying it wasn't allowed and plenty of people were taking them with there cell phones. When asked what the problem was he explained that all the riders were under the age of 18. I kindly explained to him that I had no idea and they really needed to post some signs. He then proceeded to be a jerk and insist that I wipe my card of all photos, even though I had other photos on the card. Was I wrong for telling him to Fuck off and if he put his hands on my camera I was going to beat him down.
I would have told him the same thing. Another self appointed judge and jury. I really dislike those people.
Was he an official? If not, I'd have done the same.

Ridiculous! And "jerk" is too polite a word.
1. Everyone knows it's against the law to take pictures of anyone under the age of 18.
2. Anyone should be able to tell the age of someone riding a rodeo horse at a distance.

The only thing you did that was not appropriate was threatening to "beat him down". You should have told him you would call the police and charge him with assault.
There is no prohibition on photographing minors in public.

There is no law stating that you may not take photos of children who are on public display. It may be weird to take photos at a playground of children that you may not know, but it is not illegal. The person that confronted you was an idiot and deserved anything that you may have said to him. That said, and I am sure you are aware, if a parent or guardian requests that you not take photos of their children, we as photographers, need to respect that request. I have photographed many ball games, rodeos, and even walking around in a park, children of all ages, they are cute and photogenic, what can we say? For younger children, I occasionally ask the parent if they have any objections, but for older children, junior high and above, I do not.
If he actually touched your camera and forcibly moved it in any direction, I would have called the police and threatened to file an assault charge. What a dolt. Why are you not carrying a "rights of photographers" document? I do.
Second option ... a knee in the nuts... then you get arrested. Oh well, some things are quite satisfying, like when you see him drop to the ground!

Perhaps one of them was his child - he sounds uninformed, and self appointed. He may have meant well, but wrong approach. You should not let him intimidate you - perhaps "official" intervention would have been better, as we'd hate to lose you to some nut bag (judge, jury and executioner)…..oh, and fist fights can and do go horribly wrong some times.
And if you touched him and he had a gun - - - folks here in Florida and other states are liable to shoot you and cry "self defense" and "Stand Your Ground". None of which would do you any good, right, wrong, or indifferent. I don't like bullies and "self-appointed law enforcement", and don't want to see a return to the days of the old west, prior to the start of the "check your guns with the Sheriff when you come to town era" anyway. I also don't mean to start a thread about the right to carry (or the right to brandish)....and I have read the 2nd amendment and the Federalist Papers on the 2nd Amendment.

He was wrong. You did well to not knock him on his butt. If he refused to leave you alone you should have called 911 so the officer could tell him he was wrong and to leave you alone.
As far as I'm concerned you were right and he was wrong. I've photographed at these kinds of events in my area several times and have never had any problems, it may be different in Washington though.
He was a jerk but too bad there are so many of them today.
I suppose you could have insisted one of the participants in the competition is a family member - son, daughter, nephew, or whatever. A little bit of acting can go a long way.
