Focal plane shutter noise is a problem in quiet rooms. But the traditional solution
is a leaf shutter---and there are digital cameras with leaf shutters.

Just from memory, leaf shutter accuracy may depend on the aperture used. A leaf shutter opens gradually and closes gradually, though the time frame is very small. If you use a small aperture, the film or sensor is exposed fully almost immediately. If you use a large aperture, there is partial exposure until the leaves in the shutter pass the aperture opening and again after they pass in the closing movement. Focal plane shutters, even back in the day, offered higher maximum shutter speeds and were said to be better for action photography, though potentially with distortion in the picture because the movement of the slit across the film was relatively slow. That situation has improved over time. Leaf shutters, on the other hand, typically offered higher flash synch speeds, all the way up to their maximum.

My apologies, I just assumed because it said on the screen, “Patrick Murphy, Sony Artisan of Imagery”, that he was sponsored by a Sony!

Sony Artisans of Imagery are NOT paid Sony employees, they are picked by their professional skills and credentials and agree to have their images and experiences with their (own paid for ) Sony gear shared online, through youtube and at some gear introductions where yes, just like all reviewers invited, they can choose to have their lodging picked up by Sony. Some like Tony and Chelsea Northrup prefer to pay their own lodging and food at these Sony events. This is an industry standard and all camera manufacturers do the same. Nikon did the same with their NYC rollout of the Z-cameras. What do the Sony artisans get of this. They get huge exposure for their photographic work, just like the Nikon Ambassadors that Nikon trotted out during their Z-camera introduction. No different. Cheers

I was unaware of the Sony Artisans and looked it up after reading this. I don't think you are wrong about the photographers using their own gear, but Sony could have said it better.

From Sony's Artisans page:

"Ultimately, they communicate a vast collection of stories that move us.

Making this all possible and providing the tools with which to tell these stories is Sony.

Through the Global Imaging Ambassadors initiative, we at Sony make it our priority to support great storytellers and provide them with infinite ways to create beautiful imagery.

What a calm reply Bill_de. Yes Sony is only "providing the tools" by making the cameras they choose to buy. I buy all my own Sony gear also. I get nothing from Sony other than great performance. I pay membership dues, like all pros do, to belong to Sony Imaging Pro Support, just Like Nikon and Canon pros pay to belong to their respective Pro Services. As a pro services member we can borrow and try out any gear on loan and get expedited repair service when needed, along with on-site loans, cleanings and repairs at major events. In my career of over four decades I have belonged to all three pro services, Nikon, Canon and Sony. Cheers

For all those who think any negative review is by folks just paid by other camera companies, listen here to Tony and Chelsea Northrup to know the truth of their impartiality and see early video clips when they used to criticize Sony, before Sony listened and improved. They aren't paid and accept no free gear from anyone. BTW Chelsea's main camera right now is a Nikon D850. Cheers

Nikon Z7 Review: People are MAD at us

They are, to say the least, opinionated and rather non-factual in stating their opinions. Like many/most Internet celebrities.

Just my opinion, not saying they are biased, but just ill-informed. Their many misstatements on film and digital history indicate (to me at least) that they are click driven Internet celebs. If Chelsea weren't an attractive woman, their click throughs wouldn't be worth any more than any other self-professed experts.

Just my opinion, although formed after watching many of their videos. Their episodes on Ansel Adams are laughable...

NPS (Nikon Professional Services) is free. You just need to prove you are a professional.

All my fellow pro Nikon users are paying a fee to belong, as I did when I belonged. Just like Canon and Sony Pro services. It averages $100 per year, and there are other qualifiers, like proof of professional work (samples must be linked or sent), and minimum pro equipment requirements. Just try and belong for free, good luck. Cheers

New Canon EOS R fullframe mirrorless released. The Pros and Cons:
https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/canon-eos-r-officially-announced-claims-to-have-worlds-fastest-autofocus-system/

Canon PROS:
– World’s fastest autofocus
– Full compatibility with existing EF lenses
– A cool adapter with drop-in filter (see this cool video by Caleb Pike)
– The new EOS-R lenses are focus by wire and have an extra customizable ring
– The new EOS-R lenses are stunning (50mm f/1.2 and 28-70mm f/2.0)
– It has 10 bit 4:2:2 output just like the Nikon Z
–$2299* for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $3399*. (actually more costly than similar Nikon and Sony cameras

Canon CONS:
– lack of IBIS
– single slot card
– Low battery life: 350 shots
– The EOS R does have eye-AF but only S-AF. (info via Jordan Drake)
– It uses the same “Old” 30MP sensor from the 5D IV (with more phase detection pixels added)
– The cool lenses are expensive: RF 50mm f/1.2L at $2,299, the RF 28-70mm f/2L at $2,999
– Roadmap doesn’t disclose what lenses we can expect
– The dial on the left is just an ON-OFF button
– Canon will not be opening up the RF mount specs to third parties (info via Jordan Drake)
– No AF-C in continuous high drive (slower FPS compared to Sony cameras)
– Still a huge ass crop in 4K recording (1.6 crop). Looks the same as 5D IV. Heavy rolling shutter as well. (info via Jordan Drake)
– 1080p does 60fps and not 120fps
– no compatibility with their EOS-M lenses
–$2299* for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $3399*. (actually more costly than similar Nikon and Sony cameras)

What do you Canon folks think about this? What do you Nikon and Sony folks think ? Is anyone excited to buy this, or will you stay with your present brand and cameras?

If you clicked on the link, Nikon clearly states it is free. So maybe they are being dishonest about it???

Yes I asked one what SIPS provided and nobody could tell me. Maybe you can. In addition is it 24/7/365 tech support like Canon?

Sony claims to be number one worldwide in mirrorless and Full Frame market

Folks check out the video from Photokina in this link with a Sony/Europe product manager. Good talking points and demo of Animal EYE-AF. Evidently Animal EYE-AF was requested by Sony Wildlife Pro shooters. But the rest of us will also love it for our pets. Cheers
