Thank you for asking, is it possible to verify after the purchase?

If you did not get a Canon Warranty Card, it is probably Grey Market. If you received or were advised that there was some other warranty, then it was grey market. Rest assured that Canon will at least service their grey market products, but will charge you.

Yes, B&H, Adorama do sell Grey market but list the items as IMPORTED

But of course, this is misleading - ALL cameras and lenses are imported! So unless you know that this is the "lingo" for grey market, you are not really being informed.

True - it is more of a question of who is doing the importing - the seller or in the case of Nikon, Nikon USA. I think the manufacturers like Nikon are to blame for this - rather than try to control the USA market with mafia like territorial tactics, why not create a worldwide distributor network with MAP (minimum advertised price) pricing models. But of course this would remove profit incentives for Nikon USA and again we are back to the mafia style tactics. BTW I read an article from a couple years back that Nikon will repair certain models of grey market cameras and lenses (at a cost of course) rather than flat out refuse repair service. Some older models like the D810, 800 were on the list. They are gradually becoming receptive to supporting grey market buyers it seems.

In every instance I've seen, there is something in the description to let you know it is gray market.

Never had a problem with grey market equipment and I’ve bought at least four bodies and a number of lenses this way saving a lot of money. There’s nothing wrong with the equipment, it’s who sells it to you. The company I deal with gives a three year warranty on the bodies I’ve bought. I know because I used the warranty once after I messed up with a firmware update, they use an approved Canon service centre and there was no charge to me.

If the product doesn't come with a USA Warranty Card then it is Grey Market!

I purchased a lens from Canada (Nikon 200-400mm f4 VRII) and the focus motor burned out and Nikon NY repaired it.

To add some specifics: Nikon won't repair grey-market items; Canon will, but at full cost.

Today my husband and I were on a group photo excursion. On this excursion, one of the gentlemen attending worked in some sort of position that dealt with returning Canon or Nikon cameras to their companies for repair. Evidentially, he has been in this type of business for many years, and seemed quite knowledgeable. In the course of our conversation, we were discussing the fact that a licensed Canon dealer cannot sell an item “cheaper” than anyone else. If there is a $100 discount, it is in all stores who sell Canon, not just one. Which has seemed to be accurate, from my own observations. However, I did mention to him that a couple of months ago, I found a Canon 100-400 L II lens at Adorama for $1799.00, which I thought was a great buy, especially when B&H was selling the same lens for $2199.00. In fact, I purchased the lens from Adorama. To my horror, the gentleman responded that it was probably grey market. I almost fainted. How can this be? I have never heard a word about Adorama selling grey market items. Then, he went on to say that B&H also sells grey market items. That comment almost gave me a heart attack, as I have purchased not only my Canon 5DMarkIV from them, but several lenses as well. I then asked how can a consumer tell if you are getting a grey market item? His answer, you can’t, unless you send it into the company’s repair center, and they won’t touch it.

I figured I would come here with my question, I know Hershel from B&H is a member here, and monitors posts. Has anyone else either heard, or know first hand, that Adorama or B&H sell grey market items? I’m really hoping that the answer is “no”, but I will say, the gentleman I was speaking to has been working in the camera business for years, and not in the retail end, but in the repair. It makes me wonder???

B&H used to sell new gray market equipment, but it was clearly marked as such and no one could confuse it with non gray. B&H and Adorama both sell USA new Nikon equipment. If it is not it will be clearly marked.

I purchased a canon lens from B&H at the store. I was told it was the international version (Grey Market). They told me that Canon has a year warranty for the US version, B&H would cover the one year warranty with their own. After the one year Canon would repair at same cost as US version out of warranty. I registered it on canon site without problem. Hope I never need to test the warranty or repair part.

Hey Lauren, relax and enjoy your purchases. The chances of needed any repair covered by factory warranty during the first year is, statistically, less than 2%. So the odds are in seriously your favor. And, after the first year it really doesn't matter anyway, does it?!

Enjoy your wonderful equipment in good health!

Kaitoo212 - With sincere respect since you have only recently joined this forum, issues regarding the purchase of “grey market” items have been and will continue to be discussed here forever. May I suggest that you Google the term in as many forms as you can imagine and settle down for lots of reading? That subject alone will take you thru the coming winter and well beyond. It is not a simple, obvious topic like whether the Packers will win the Super Bowl. Of course, we all know they will (relax sports fans from other regions, I’m just kidding!). After you have exausted that topic, Kaitoo, you can turn your attention to others like “exposure”, “composition” and the dreaded “mirrorless”. Best regards and happy shooting, Ralph

I believe if you register your equipment on line for warranty purposes you will find out real quick if it is grey market.

I have purchased Grey market 5Dmk 4 in the UK, get 3 year warranty with the camera. Lots of people by Grey market equipment in the UK from the same company with excellent service from the outset.
It also help that on my 5Dmk4 I also save around £1100.0 (around $1300.00 US).

This practice is creeping into everything. I highly recommend ESET Internet Security software and have used it for at least 10 years without any problems. Recently I purchased another ESET software package from Amazon.com which I have done before without any problems. After I installed the software and attempted to activate it I kept getting a message about "Invalid License Number". I finally contacted ESET support and was told that this particular package was from China and ESET US could not offer any support for it. What the hell!?!
