I have taken excellent photos at both. Of the two, I prefer Red Rock. Another trip I would recommend is Mt. Charleston. It’s not in the same category with RRC orVOF, but it is only a little over an hour from Vegas and a beautiful place to hike - especially at the peak of the fall colors.

I live in Las Vegas and have been to both. My favorite is Valley of Fire, if you have the time for sure see them both. I live about 5 miles from Red Rock. This shot in Red Rock.

Valley of Fire is really amazing and the road along the north shore of Lake Mead has some of the most amazing landscapes along it as well. You can access Valley of Fire from the Lake Shore Drive which starts either just south of Lake Las Vegas or from Highway 93 in Boulder City. Both of these require an entrance fee to get into Lake Mead national Recreation Area and those fee booths are staffed most of the time. Valley of Fire is a Nevada State Park and is just outside the fee booth(which I have never seen staffed) at the south end of Overton, NV which can be accessed by exit 91 off of US I-15 about 40 miles east of Las Vegas. Not many views of Lake Mead but the rocks along here are wonderful to photograph. A few pullouts make this easy and in some cases a short hike is necessary to get some great shots. I standardly use this road as an alternative to driving into Vegas and it never disappoints. This area is immediately to the North and East of Gold Butte- one of the newest of the National Monuments and another great place to photograph (4wd - needed to get into lots of areas there.)

Zion National Park is well worth seeing ! ..., about a 3 hour drive NE of Vegas.

I used to live in Vegas; definitely Valley of Fire if you only have time for one, but much better to see both. Add Hoover Dam if you have the time. Grand Canyon is a long day trip, but worth it.

RGreenway Loc: Morristown, New Jersey

If you can spend one overnight out of Vegas, highly recommend Bryce Canyon, good reasonable lodging at Ruby's Best Western, about a 4 hour scenic drive from Vegas, and return driving through Zion Canyon to Vegas. If a second overnight possible, recommend Springdale UT for another stay. My wife and I almost ALWAYS do this on a trip to Vegas. Planning another one in about a month!

It's been a long time since we were in Los Vegas and visited all the sites mentioned in the other replays, but the one that my wife and I agree upon (which doesn't happen to often) is the Valley of Fire. Easy access to great photos.

ditchdigger Loc: Boulder City NV

I’ve lived in Las Vegas since 1946. Both areas are very colorful. Red Rock is more crowed with people as it is only 1/2 hour drive as opposed to about an hour and 1/2 to Valley of Fire. Lots to see in both places...a toss up.

a6k Loc: Detroit & Sanibel

The municipal water system in Henderson, a nearby suburb, offers easy trails and even blinds. I would not usually think of the LV area for water birds, but it's worth the trip. Take a long lens. Back then, all I had was my phone but my wife was using a Nikon Coolpix and took many good souvenirs.
