Somehow, I have lost interest in this thread. Can anyone suggest why that may be?

Instead of playing this game of "warmer....warmer....not so warm....colder....colder..." why not just say it?

Are you afraid that when we find out what store it was you will get some embarrassing questions that you can't answer? Or more likely you will get the B&H or Samy's rep coming to this thread and explaining the actual situation and it will differ from what you described?

As previously stated:

"The problem is that I DON'T KNOW if I am blowing this out of proportion or if they tried to scam me. I will continue to do business with them, very carefully, for a while. If we work this out, and I have been offered the chance to, and I have no similar problems, I will revive this thread and post a public apology. If they continue questionable business practices, I will name them.

I asked for feedback on the situation - opinions as to whether I was right or wrong in my assessment. Until I know, beyond a reasonable doubt, I will NOT "man up" and name the company!"

If you name them that would go a long way to knowing. If it were B&H, Samy's or some other long term reputable outfit I'd already know the answer; they aren't.

If it were one of the myriad of shady camera shops that abound on the internet, then who can tell beyond the dealer themselves? We certainly can't.

It's not hypothetical at all, it's a real transaction.

I don't blame you. I'm the OP and I'm losing interest! There are more people concerned (or nosy) about what store it is that the incident.

Yeah because without knowing the store, it's IMPOSSIBLE to give any meaningful advice about your "hypothetical-but-not-hypothetical" situation.

Sounds like B&H or Adorama. I don't think either one would bait and switch.

This is not the original poster who is identifying Adorama. That store is still "hypothetical", just to be clear.

I understood.
XYZ remains an unknown.
The OP is steadfast in his decision not to release the name until he knows "beyond all reasonable doubt" the intent of XYZ.

Yes, a very odd topic, but one that has me baffled.

HYPOTHETICALLY, XYZ is a business from which I have bought thousands of dollars worth of equipment over a long period. Recently, for whatever reason, there have been whispers, rumors and even court actions regarding questionable practices on their part, but I have never encountered such practices.

Last week, I ordered camera #12345 from the used camera department. The camera was advertised as being in condition 10. Several days later, I received an email from the company saying they could not find camera #12345, even though their records show they had it. They said they could sell me a new camera at a small discount or they could sell me used camera #67890 with a lower condition rating at a slightly lower price. Given no other options, I ordered camera #67890; I was told it would be here Wednesday. Now it's Friday; my camera is finally out for delivery (I hope!). BUT, today I called the warehouse. Yes, they do have camera #12345 in stock.

Simple question... Was I the victim of a bait-and-switch?

I am NOT accusing XYZ of employing this tactic regularly. My attorney, a golfing buddy, says it appears that I was. I cannot believe that a company I have done business with for years would stoop so low.

I would appreciate your feedback on this HYPOTHETICAL situation. Thank you.
Yes, a very odd topic, but one that has me baffled... (show quote)

Clearly, this is NOT a hypothetical situation.

Believe it! Companies and people do stoop low!
Was the salesperson corrupt, or were you gullible, or both?

Many buyers, including myself, would have called it quits after
the "couldn't find" the item I had ordered, camera #12345.

With so many reputable sellers, why bother with a "hypothetical" business
that has been the object of "whispers, rumors and even court actions regarding
questionable practices" just because YOU hadn't been a victim YET?

Perhaps you were just groomed to trust??
In this day and age, we all need to be vigilant!

Must be nice being so perfect that you never make a mistake or misplace something - why are you so sure that the camera dealer was trying to pull something? - the facts that were set out in the original post have nothing to suggest that. In the real world nothing is ever 100% perfect and every major retailer can likely cite instances when they were unable to locate a specific piece of used equipment - why is your immediate response that they are doing something dishonest?

All these suggestions about calling the company back make no sense ... if the OP was honest with us.

How do you get a phone number for a hypothetical company?

I bet it's 555-1234. : )

By not naming the company, we can start harboring dark thought about lots of companies. : )

If you look at internet reviews of even the best companies, including B&H and Adorama, they all have a few bad reviews, as mistakes happen with human beings. It's the preponderance of good or bad reviews that tell the story. The OP never told us what the ultimate result was, did he keep the second camera, or ask that he get the newly found original camera (oh yeah, the whole thing is hypothetical). How companies deal with problems is what counts.

It's funny you should make that statement. After finally receiving the camera, I examined it and attempted to set it up. So many features, so many settings. But fun. I received an email from customer service telling me I could return the lower-priced camera and, upon receipt, they would sell me the higher-ups iced camera, so I could evaluate the difference. Now comparative evaluations are best done side-by-side. So I countered with an offer that they sell me the "better" camera, ship it to me and let me compare them, whereupon I would, within the time period allowed, return the least desirable one for credit. Now I enjoy a comfortable credit rating with Paypal Credit PPC). When I stated that I would let the newer camera on PPC, I was informed that the company does not sell via PPC over the phone or by email. I would have to order directly from the online catalog. I told them I'd keep the camera I received for a while. I had already ordered some accessories (using PPC). I told them what I thought of their customer service (definitely declining; ten years ago, they acted as helpful friends, nor hostile enemies. Their emails were personal, not scripted.). As it stands, my only complaint seems to be with the email customer service department. I have talked to the warehouse, telephone customer service, shipping and the store; all have been VERY helpful. But the email customer service is staffed by jerks less-than-helpful people.

OK, here is a revelation for those jerks who were more interested in the name of the store and less than the incident. The name of the company begins with a "B" and ends with an "O"; now you know. I'll enjoy the next page of guesses. Please, those with an IQ higher than 79 (Forrest Gump's IQ), don't give it away.
