I took the Amtrak from Reno, NV to Sacramento, CA and back a few months ago. Besides stopping at about a dozen small towns along the way the train passed through the Union Pacific rail yard in Roseville.
I took these photos out the Amtrak window while rolling through when heading back up the hill to Reno.

The Roseville rail yard is a great place to do train photography. It's the largest rail yard on the West Coast, so there's a lot of action there.

My wife's sister and her husband live in Roseville. He used to work for the railroad before he retired. He made many trips from Roseville to Reno. I don't know what his job was but he wasn't a train driver person. I guess that would be the engineer.

Has anyone noticed that just about all trains no longer have cabooses.

Cabooses went away (for the most part) 30ish years ago. A small telemetry device attached to the last car (the F.R.E.D. or Federal Rear End Detector, although some substitute a different F-word) monitors brake-line air pressure and train integrity. Trackside detectors monitor for hot bearings, dragging equipment, and other issues the rear brakemen used to watch for in the caboose. A few cabooses are still in use as manned "shoving platforms" when a train (typically a short one) makes frequent reverse moves as part of its work. In those cases, the rear crewman watches the track and stays in touch with the engineer by radio. He or she can also "dump the air" (apply emergency braking) if necessary.

Those UP locomotives are impressive looking units. Thank you for sharing.
