Thank you. That was a long time ago. It didn't look that great if you remember that the lens diameter was considerably larger than the height of the camera body and made the camera look very front heavy.

Okay, I'll bite: why? Does that extra stop-and-a-half or so make that much difference in what you shoot? Particularly since today's digital chips can do a pretty good job at high ISO settings....

Because they do even better at low ISO settings. Not to mention that a lens that fast can produce extremely shallow depth of field, and let you use a shutter of 1/2400 when a lens with a stop and a half less would only let you use 1/800. And a host of other reasons that are not necessarily related to ISO.

For the most part, an f/0.95mm lens is a gimmick. Back in the late 60's either Leica or Nikon (I don't remember which) introduced an f/0.95mm lens. It was very heavy and very expensive considering that one gained only 1/3 stop over an f/1.2 lens of a similar focal length prime lens that was smaller and weighed little by comparison. The price difference between the two lenses was a couple of thousand dollars (like 8-9 thousand dollars in today's inflated dollar). In those days you were limited to the ISO of the film you had in your camera, so although such a lens did have an application, it was extremely limited. Today, with the high range of ISO on a digital camera, I can only dismiss an f/0.95mm lens as a sales gimmick.

Canon had one for their rangefinder.

I am sure if Nikon does introduce their own f 0.95 for their fullframe mirrorless system, shortly thereafter, Canon and Sony will match it. Cheers

Meyer Optik Görlitz will bring a 50mm and a 75mm f0.95 on the market for Sony full frame next spring, with versions for Leica and Fujifilm.

Perhaps Sony will see how that goes before releasing their own version.

I think that this will remain a niche product. Mirrorless cameras have a great low-light performance (the Sony cameras certainly do) so that very few photographers will see the need for a f/0.95 lens.

Well, duh. But as I said, the IQ at higher ISOs today makes the light gathering relatively moot, and the DOF at f.95 would be, what about 6" at 10 feet compared to 9-3/4" at f1.4 and 8" at f1.2? I wonder how often that shade of differential will make a difference (other than to have the subject's ear in focus and their nose out of focus).

Given the probable size of such a lens, again I say this is more about being jewelry than a truly useful tool.

This lens makes me think long and hard about saving up for the new mirrorless Nikon. It will supposedly be announced post the camera release.

I would like a 300mm f/0.95 ... does it come with a sling?

Well, start yourself off with the Sigma 200-500 f2.8, just to get a feel for that kind of lens...

Also the most difficult to focus accurately, especially in manual.

Yeah, there are those for whom cameras are more like jewelry - ostentatious showing of wealth...alas, I imagine most passers-by wouldn't be able to tell anyway. Best to get a Leica Monochrome and really show your stuff, no?

Ostentatious Show of Wealth has been in my vocabulary as "conspicuous consumption" since a district manager mentioned it to me 40 years ago. It still really just means "keeping up with the Joneses"

Well, really, it means "staying one step ahead of the Joneses" when you think about it.

Maybe the OP is into very shallow depth of field.

And even if not shooting wide open, that shallow depth of field would make manual focusing in low light much easier.

I had a Voigtlander 50mm f1.1 for my Leica. It was a brilliant lens and eminently usable.
