As a New Englander, ive found that the best foliage is generally around Columbus Day if you're in central to northern NY, VT, NH, or Maine. I also think that the coastal colors aren't always as vibrant as those of the interior. Hopefully you have a good satellite based GPS, especially for the mountains. If so wandering is your friend, go off the beaten path. Also you'll probably have better luck finding places to stay if you look at the towns that are near the big draw places like Stowe, Vt, or North Conway, etc.

So Jaymatt, do you have any particular subject or interest areas that appeal to you or your wife? I’m sure you’ll get a lot more specific recommendations, especially for the lesser known and less crowded destinations.

How things have changed! In 1962 my father loaned me his Buick Regal (crappy car) to go on a fall foliage honeymoon trip to Vermont. I don't remember any traffic nor any difficulty in staying at beautiful inns without prior reservations. I don't think that hordes of tourists would have enhanced the experience.

So have you made any plans or discovered any new destinations yet? I'm sure lots of New England friends have further ideas if you have a bit more information on your needs and subjects of interest.

Think about W.Va. for fall colors too...
