I have MS Word and it doesn't make me a great writer. I have a high end DSLR too.

So are we supposed now to think you are not a great photographer either? I mean the statement is a question.

Advertising agencies know how to market to Americans: regardless of need, buying newest, biggest, most expensive is always the goal here, no?

Technology allows good photographers a path towards getting great shots. My BIF hit rate is far higher with my D5 than it ever was with my FM! At the same time, you can't buy your way into great photography - you have to mix a solid understanding and leveraging of technology with a real artistic vision. That's when the sparks fly IMO.

I think that's for the entire world not just Americans. I think the most expensive doesn't work well for Americans. It's the newest that works well. Biggest is as good as Smallest.

Does it make you a better photographer?

Wasn't it the great Ansel Adams who wrote something to the effect of, "A great photographer can take a great photo with a pin-hole camera"!?

Camera and lenses are only tools. If someone does not have the expertise and experience of using those tools no matter the camera or how professional the lens is, the results are not going to be very satisfactory.

Not sure but I have always said, "a good Pro-photographer could photograph a wedding with only a point and shoot camera. While the bad Pro-photographers can't even shoot it with a Hasselblad no matter how many lenses and gear they carry around". The studios I shot for many times agreed with me on those points.
