Hi My name is Bonnie. I have a question. I just purchased a Nikon DS3400 camera and won the bid on a telephoto lens on ebay. The lens is AFS Nikkor 55-200 mm. My question is: are all the AFS lens VR? It does not mention it and I can not fine my answer on the net. If not, will I have trouble with focus vibration?

In answer to your first question, no. VR is nice to have, but by no means essential. Read your manual. Use an appropriate shutter speed, learn to hold the camera and depress the shutter in a way to minimize movement. The lens you bought is a good lens.

Right. I have lenses with and without VR, and I wonder how much real difference it make for me.

I have a couple of lenses that have VR. I never remember to use that feature.

I'm sure the lens is a good one, just keep in mind the shutter/focal Length rule- Your minimum shutter speed for still objects should never be lower than the focal length of the lens. For instance if you are zoomed to 200 mm your shutter speed should be no less than 1/200. In the same light at 50 mm your shutter speed could be 1/60. This assumes you are not photographing moving objects like people or wildlife. In that case consider 1/500 you safest minimum speed most of the time. VR is a nice feature and will give you sharp pictures 2 or more stops below the shutter/focal length equation but your camera has good noise reduction qualities at high ISO allowing fast shutters in all but the darkest situations so take the lens, abide by this rule and you'll be fine.

Here's a link to a review of a non VR version of that focal length, probably the lens you bid on:

You could have asked the seller if the lens has VR but knowledgeable sellers would have posted that feature if it were on that lens. Good luck and have fun with it.

If the seller put the FULL model description in the posting, it would have included VR. If the lens shows up with VR, then bonus to you. If not, no worries. Many of the worlds BEST images were captured without VR. You will just learn to shoot with the parameters of the lens. I wouldn't worry about it.

The answer is no - not all AF-S lenses feature VR. In the case of the 55-200 there are several versions, one of which does not have VR.

Look at your lens when you get it. On the barrel it will be marked VR. I have seen VR printed on many of those 55-200 lenses.
VR is good for slow shutter speeds. At shutter speeds above 250 sec. VR usually becomes a non issue, usually.

If the lens mounted on my camera has VR, it's on... I rarely use a tripod.
