Okay, I've heard about bridge cameras, what are they?

I keep one in the bottom of my camera bag just in case I come across a bridge that needs to be photographed.
kind of a Bridge between a point and shoot camera and a DSLR with interchangeable lenses,,,,fixed lens but that lens generally goes from wide angle to medium to extreme telephoto,,,in order to do this the sensor is generally very small the largest being I believe one inch and in good light perform well but in bad light or low light or indoors generally poor performers....
Have a look at the Lumix FZ1000. A fine example of a bridge camera.
I own this camera and really, really like it when I want control similar to a DSLR, but want to carry something smaller, lighter and a do-it-all lens.
Thanks to all. BTW I know where there is a bridge waiting to be photographed. I enjoyed your answer Hal81.

Here's one, though I didn't have my bridge camera with me.

Great shot! You were in the right place at the right time. A rather unique lighting.

Yes! Mine is right next to my car camera, but my tree camera always sits next to me on the passenger's seat.
In the automotive world, there are SUVs and now crossovers. Crossovers may be compared to bridge cameras - not quite this and not quite that.

Thanks!
It was a setup, actually. I was there two days earlier around the same time scouting for a picture op and thought that the morning sunrise coming from behind the mountain had some possibilities. So I went back, this time a lot earlier - and got myself set up in precisely the spot I wanted, so that all the elements would come together. Mother nature cooperated with an amazing sky and color-filled sunrise, and Nikon did the rest - all I did was snap the shutter. Oh, and I took it as a 15 image 3 row pano.

I have an FZ 1000 also, I like to use it for pano's and 4K video. It's a great camera.
