Northern lights! My dream also! Summer is tough due to short nights, but if you are up really late you might get lucky! Clouds another issue, but there again, if you are there for several or more nights, might get lucky. That's why they usually book cruises and such for photographers something like "in search of hte Northern Lights"! But Iceland is one of the very best places to see them. I would suggest you check a website like this daily on the trip to plan your outings. https://www.northernlightsiceland.com/northern-lights-forecast/ (be sure to scroll down to the current forecast map).
And if you love birds, you might get the opportunity to photograph some Puffins! This is a little late for large numbers but there should be some around! Enjoy the trip! Some friends of mine are there now and report cold temps and snow so be prepared!

Welcome to the hog Dianne. Keep taking pictures, watch utube videos. Unless you are without a budget, use and learn with what you have. If you find you need a different lens for your trip, consider renting. There are several good places to chose from. But first use what you have and then determine if you are in need of more gear. Best of shooting.

You will learn a lot on this site but it will all make more sense as you learn by trial and error on your own. If you're like me, it takes a while to absorb all you're learning, so step back from the comments here and let them sink in. Most of my learning has come from looking back on the photos I've taken. That'll be your most immediate reference. Do well and show us your photos.
