Flash compensation and bracketing with Nikon D7500 and Nisson Di700a flash

Hopefully this question makes sense. My understanding is that this flash is controlled by the settings on the flash and not the camera specified settings. Assuming that is true, my question relates to flash compensation and flash bracketing selections on the D7500 - will they have any impact on the Nisson flash? Or do I need to actually handle flash compensation and/or bracketing manually via adjustments to the flash itself?

I'm not sure what you mean by flash bracketing. The D7500 has a setting for flash repetition and one for flash compensation (by 1/2 or 1/3 EV increments up to +/- 3 EVs.) These controls are for the built-in flash as well as a compatible external flash devices. I know it works fine with my SB-700; I have no idea if it will control a Nissin (note the spelling) device. I would say the best thing to do is try it and let us know.

ETA: The Nissin website says the Di700a will be controlled by the Nikon iTTL settings. I can't find if it will respond to the compensation and/or repeat from the camera.

Thanks. I’ll play around with it and see what I can figure out. When referring to ‘flash bracketing’ I am looking at the D7500 custom setting Auto Bracketing Set - two of the options are AE only or AE & Flash.

Ah ha. I found this in the manual for the Di700 at the Nissin website:

Page 10:

- On some cameras, the TTL flash power compensation setting is provided in its menu mode. When setting the TTL flash power compensation on your camera, any compensation which is also set on the Di700 will be counted in addition to the compensation you selected in the camera’s menu mode. ( i.e. Having a +1 compensation set on the flash and a +1.3 compensation set in the camera would yield a total compensation of +2.3 EV.)

Good find. I don't do much with a flash so I had not noticed this setting. I would say this is driven by the camera exclusively.

Flash compensation set at the camera does alter the output level of the flash. With my Nikon SB-700, the flash duration goes from 1/1042 to 1/40000 second. You don't have to put the flash in manual mode. Radio triggers that support TTL metering will also transmit the information to the flash.
