Nikon Coolpix P510 and filters, adapters etc.

does anyone here have any experience with the Nikon Coolpix p 510? I didn't realize until recently that apparently you can use an adapter so that you can make use of UV, polarizing filters etc. Also read that someone was using a Macro lens or a stack of lens to do macro. Everything I've read says that you need to know what the size of your camera lens is - 53mm, 55mm, 58 mm, 62 mm etc but I cannot find that anywhere on the cameral. Before shelling out $$, I'd like to know what size my lens is --- I even looked on the Nikon site and couldn't find it. Thanks in advance.

Several sources (B&H, Adorama) say the inside diameter of the lens is 50.8mm. That is apparently the size lens cap (and I would imagine - the filter size) that fits this lens. There was a Nikon cap that came with the camera originally.

I have the original lens cap and it says nothing. Several places are advertising adapters but I can't figure out what size to get.

thanks -- I had that bookmarked but don't want to waste money on something that won't work -- so then I need to find 62 mm filters - does that seem right? Also do you know of any close up lenses, or polarizing filters that would be a good deal? thanks again for your help.

Yes, you’ll need 62mm filters. I hate to spend your money, but you won’t go wrong with a Nikon or Tiffen polarizer and clear filter, or Tiffen close-up lenses. Be sure to get a circular polarizer and, if Tiffen, I would recommend coated filters. And don’t forget a screw-in lens hood. Probably a collapsible rubber hood would be most practical with that zoom lens. Good luck!

I had that camera quite a while ago...LOVED it. Have had the P600 since ...loved it too, now have the P900...love it but it's heavy with the zoom extended. I did have some of the things that work with it and they worked great. Got a lot of photos I really love from that camera, but sold it and all that went with it and sorry I can't tell you more. I really LOVED the lighter weight of both the P510 and the P600. I'm glad someone had the info you were seeking.

funny, I've run through several cameras since I first got this one - I wanted a bridge camera for the weight. After I got it (never even knew you could get attachments), I went to a Canon bridge camera because I wanted to shoot raw. Then I went to a Lumar because of the good lenses but it was really heavy and the telephoto max was 4x. Then I decided to try a smaller Canon G7 - takes good photos but not as good as my old Nikon so I've been using it recently. I still miss not shooting in raw - find I spend more time finetuning my edits. Thanks for your info.

I have a P610 and use 52mm filters and lens hood. They screw in and fit well. However, once you put a filter or hood on the camera it will stick out a bit farther than the end of the lens. Use a caliper (I think that is what it is called) to measure. Or order from a place you can return if it doesn't fit (I did).

I’ve got a couple of Nikon P520’s for my knock around camers. Nikon originally told me filters & lens hoods would not work on them. Saw threads on the lens; so figured I would get some filters & see if they worked. No problem; use Tiffany circular polarizer & collapsible lens. Works great. One caveat; extreme end at the wide angle will vignette with or without lens hood. IMHO my Tamron 18-270 works great on my D5500.
