Look up the focus points on any Nikon DSLR camera, they dont have 93% coverage or anywhere near the number of focus points as the Sony A9 and A7III. CO you are so wrong here, sorry. I teach this stuff at the university levels so I have to be accurate when explaining the physics of photography to my students. The focus abilities of cameras are NOT rated in EVs. EVs are a measure of light, which refers to the light sensitivity of the image sensor. Nikon incorrectly links EV to autofocus. Yes Nikon's sensor (made by Sony) can see down to -4EV and your Nikon D850 can focus there too, at the most sensitive focus spot on a DSLR, the center spot.

However, having the ability to have more complete frame coverage with more focus points across 93% of the frame is what Sony's A9 and A7III have, and NO present DSLR cameras have that, at any level. I shoot pro sports and that is a game changer over my best Nikon's and Canon's focus systems. Check the tests and reviews comparing focus systems across the entire frame.

From Nikons specs for the D850 : Maximum Autofocus Areas/Points 153. (No 93% focus point coverage of the frame)

And Sony A9 and A7III have 695 contrast-detection points plus 425 contrast detection points, with 93% focus point coverage of the frame. Nikon and Canon DSLRs aren't even close. It is easier to cover the entire frame with focus points in a mirrorless setup as focus is read directly off the image sensor, not from light reflected down from the mirror to a small focus sensor in DSLRs.

CO ,DONT CONFUSE 100 % VISUAL COVERAGE OF THE VIEWFINDER WITH FOCUS POINT COVERAGE. THEY ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. SONY'S EVF HAS 100% COVERAGE OF THE VIEWFINDER, AS DO MOST FULLFRAME CAMERAS

Boy you guys wear me out with your general lack of complete knowledge as you try to bash Sony. LOL
Look up the focus points on any Nikon DSLR camera,... (show quote)

You would assume that some of these vocal guys would know what 93% coverage means. Cheese and rice! That is embarrassing.

As I predicted, Sony is fully aware and is prepared for Nikon's fullframe mirrorless release on Aug 23 and Canon's fullframe mirrorless intro around Sept. 4. Sony is ready with new tech to upstage both Nikon and Canon. Anyone who expected less from Sony, really doesn't understand that Sony is playing for keeps here against all fullframe mirrorless competition, and Sony doesn't live in any fear of Nikon or Canon. Real competition is good for us all. Cheers

Wait till the Olympus fanatics come out of the woodwork - once they find out what exactly is the new flagship camera Oly is introducing early next year. So far, all I’ve seen is a claim that one will no longer need a FF camera. But please remember, I’m just the messenger. Don’t shoot me.

That should be an awesome Olympus, they make fine gear. Us Sony folks would never shoot any messenger, but watch out for those Nikon and Canon folks, they are aggressive. LOL

It sure is an interesting time in photography. I remember when digital was just coming in and folks thought this would be the end of photography as a hobby. Then they all said phones were going to kill the photography market.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Mirrorless will mushroom over the next few years. I have excellent results with my current Nikon equipment so I will not make the jump soon. I will however be looking at all the innovations and new products that will be coming out. I believe they will all try to out do the other and really create some great equipment for all of us.
Looking forward to it all.
I use a lot of Sony equipment and created this post to create interest, and it has. But, like I said, 80% of the time I shoot Nikon currently, and 20% Sony. I used to do Canon but three systems were constantly knocking at my wallet.

Within reason, if you were to give an individual the same setup from each make, the results would look identical. A snapshot shooter will produce snapshots from both the best or worst gear. An artist will create art no matter the camera/lens combo.

In 2018, if one can’t create a great photo, it isn’t because of the equipment.

In a condensed video, here are the features of the A7III that the 24 megapixel Nikon Z6 has to match or beat at the same $1995 price tag. We will all know in a few days. Cheers

Nikons new Z-cameras look great in the ads, but in reality are sadly flawed: The hype didn't match the reality.

TONY AND CHELSEA NORTHRUP ARE BACK FROM NIKON NYC EVENT. THEY GOT ONE HOUR WITH A PRE-PRODUCTION Z CAMERA AND ARE NOT HAPPY ON MANY LEVELS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUii9dTwPkw

Jared Polin also was in NY and isn't happy either:
"All Things NIKON MIRRORLESS VS SONY (Is Nikon CRAZY?) RAWtalk 248"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2C9Z0foXOw

Already reactions online like this "The fact is that Nikon cheated on the press release. They didn't mention the one card slot. They didn't mention the 12 bit compressed raw. They didn't mention the limits of the buffer. They didn't mention that the 12 fps become 5.5 fps if you want to have continuous exposure metering (which you always want if you are a pro), and so on and so forth. That is SO sad for such an historical company as Nikon, which wrote important pages in the history of photography."

IMHO the cameras will still be huge sellers. Nikon folks have waited so long, they have huge lens collections, they will overlook any shortcomings. The extensive ad campaigns by Nikon and the stores like B&H and Adorama (which are salivating at the prospect of all those sales) will drive all those sales.

But serious pros will stay away from these as one card slot is a deal-breaker, poor battery life is a deal breaker, poor buffer is a deal-breaker, low ACTUAL frame rates are a deal-breaker, No EYE-AF is a deal-breaker. And new buyers who are not already invested in Nikon glass will objectively look and compare and shop elsewhere . Nikon is asking a premium price for these new Z-cameras and new Z-lenses, but is not delivering the premium product. Very sad and disappointing to me and loads of others.

Sony has nothing to worry about from these Z-cameras. Nikon will hold onto their flock, and that will mean big sales. But when three of the biggest Nikon fans, Tony & Chelsea Northrup, and Jared Polin can't even recommend these cameras, Nikon has a problem that wont just go away with a firmware update.

Canon is watching this Nikon misstep, and you can bet when they announce their own fullframe mirrorless cameras soon, they won't make the same mistakes as Nikon. And Sony is readying its next camera releases which will greatly raise the bar again with their new 5.6 million dot resolution EVF ( both A9, A7RIII and both Nikon Z-cameras have the best of current EVFs with 3.6 million dot resolution) . And Sonys next camera will have 4k/60p and stacked sensors and more to move past anything in fullframe mirrorless that Nikon and Canon will have. Bet your house on it. Nikon and Canon will find out, coming late to the party, that it wont be so easy to knock Sony off the top. Cheers

From SonyAlpha online site: (quote)
"Now that people are testing the new Nikon Z7 and Z6 cameras some quirks are being discovered by Dpreview, Gordon Laing, Thom Hogan, Dan Watson and others:

1) Both the Nikon Z7 and Z6 have blackout screen when you take a shot.
2) The Z7 shoots 9fps with battery grip only(!!!) and with locked exposure. Without tbattery grip and no locked exposure and with live feedback on it shoots 5.5fps (similar for Z6).
3) Z7 has max 2.5 seconds buffer at 12 bit compressed RAW. That means around 22 shots (similar for Z6).
4) Buffer clears very slow like the 5 year old Sony A7 cameras :)
5) 330 shots according to CIPA (Son7 A7III is rated 650 shots at CIPA)
6) Nikon confirmed that they will NOT share the lens mount information to third parties as Sony does. This means Sigma, Tamron and Tokina will have to do reverse engineering and autofocus should be therefore slower.
7) One card slot. It’s not a deal breaker for me personally but it might be for PRO’s working on the field that don’t wanna risk their money. Not only because of possible (although very rare) electronic failure. If you have a backup card you can separate the card after the shooting by putting one card in one bag and the other one in another bag.
8) XQD. They are as good or better than the best SD cards. But good luck finding them for cheap if you don’t need all that speed.
9) no exposure compensation dial (which I do use a lot)
10) No Eye AF and missing focus control buttons
11) No f/1.4 primes on roadmap, no macro on roadmap and ridiculous f/0,95 hype ($6,000, huge lens and manual focus only).

What Sony has to learn from the Nikon Z:

1) handling matters, please improve grip control and menu system on the next generation A7-A9 cameras
2) We need true weathersealing
3) Use all space on the camera to add controls (like on Sony A9) or a top screen.
4) We need APP support back in camera. Please open the system for third-party developers…this would be huge!
5) And where is our Timelapse functionality gone? Hello? " (quote)

Here are latest rumors for upcoming Sony A7SIII, possibly announced at Photokina (late September) . If true, Sony has again raised the bar way beyond anything Nikon and Canon will bring out anytime soon, if at all, in fullframe mirrorless hybrid cameras. Keep in mind David Oastler was a longtime pro Nikon shooter and does want Nikon and Canon to succeed with their fullframe mirrorless cameras , and has stated that, many times. Cheers

Doesn't look like the new Nikon Z cameras are hurting sales of Sony's A7III, at least according to Amazon US.
