I've been with FAA for about 5 years now,....in that time I've seen a large dwindling of sales.

The trick there is to "Market" your FAA website effectively to draw in buyers.

There are sooooo many talented and not so talented photographers online these days,..I think the public just dismisses them as a nuisance,...but it can be done.

FAA is free for up to 25 posted images,...then $30.00 per year for unlimitted uploads.

I usually cover my cost during the year, but it's definitely not a cake walk,....the more images you display increases your chances,...many photographers upload images in the thousands.

My problem is I specialize on a unique market that that appeals to probably very few interested buyers.
I love my website that FAA allowed me to create,...it took many, many hours to get it exactly as I liked it.
I display approx 450 or so images.
For this old timer it's a place to post my very best work,..my aim is well composed images that lend them self to interesting wall decor.

For anyone interested in seeing what I created on FAA,.... https://marty-saccone.pixels.com

There you go,.....I'm marketing when I tell others,...adding to the thousands and thousands of photographers/artists,...flooding the internet,...screaming,...see me,...see my work,...look at my work,.....but that's how it works,....No marketing,.....no sales,...no guarantee either.

Maybe you have a unique niche????,...that buyer will flock to???,...there are those who have made a name for themselves.

I have several displays around the small town I live in,...in public buildings and such,..(about 30 or 40 stretched canvas prints) that I've heavily invested $$ into. You have to maintain a positive outlook once you commit your self,...get use to a LOT of tire kickers and uninterested viewers.
Then your work just becomes familiar with the local community,....that's it,....it goes no further.

I've found an interesting work around that bring in pretty good sales thru focusing on the local tourist industry where I live.

I've licensed one of my images to a national restaurant chain for use in their interior remodeling decor,...a nice surprise that my efforts have rewarded me with.

Anyway FAA is a good place in my opinion,...have made many new friends with other artists and utilize FAA's online forum to share ideas and concepts on marketing.

Pretty images,...are,...pretty images,....and people love to browse,..browse,...browse,....all over the internet,....but few buy and it's worse since everyone now has built in cameras in their smart phones that the post absolutely everywhere you go online.
Has smothered the market,...to such an extent,...that you just gloss over pics,...tooooooo common place.

Finding discriminating buyers ain't easy pickings,....for sure.

I love what I do and am proud to have FAA as my showplace. I'm going to be creating images till they plant me in the ground anyway.

At my age what would I do with fame,...no use to me,...a little recognition from other photographers is a gratifying experience and give me a place and chance to carry on photo speak with those who are doing the same thing.,...artists don't buy from artists though.

Good luck,...overall FAA is worth the reasonable cost/year,....just brush up on some original marketing skills or ideas to direct fresh viewers (buyere??),..to your site,...and you're off and running.

A fine collection of images Marty, well done. I recently discovered Lubec, it truly is a beautiful place. It's a bit of a drive for me (5+ Hrs.) but so well worth the trip.

I've been on FAA almost since it started. Don't sell a lot, but some. I can have my own prints made there, so that's a plus. They do a good job. As any other marketing ploy, you have to work it. If you simply post and forget, you'll simply have an online archive.

I have been on Fine Art America since 2012. I am a paid member, in the past 8 years, I sold 3 images.
Not surprising since everyone is now a photographer!

Do any UHHers participate in the marketing site, Fine Art America. If so, is it a good place to market photos?

Great place, have sold several things there. The key to selling is the use of " key words " in posting your work. If your key words are not sufficient no one will find your work no matter how spectacular it is. I recommend it.

Read the fine prints on what rights you are giving away to ensure you know that and agree with that. Having said that, I do have friends who have work on the site but have not heard that they are making a killing. I think the nice thing about the site is that the photographer does nothing except put up the work and the site managers do all the printing, sending, etc.

The problem with FAA rests in the way their search engine is set up. I was once an FAA member and I often searched to see where my work was appearing. The earliest result I got was on page twelve of results. There are user groups a-plenty on FAA and I read many of them, This is where I learned of the issue with the FAA search engine.

It is weighted to favor those who have many sales. This is because of the cut FAA gets of every sale. This is also a galactic Catch-22 - in that you can't sell if you aren't seen and you won't be seen unless you sell.

In five years' time, I sold exactly two images on FAA and both of those orders were cancelled.

To wit: I've left FAA and have not regretted the decision.
