How many megapixels do you need

Viewing size .
To post pics on a cellphone , 4mp is more than enough . If you’re into large prints , 11x14 , 16x20 you need more . When I wanted a large print you needed a fine grain film , same with digital , you need more pixels .

I have L glass, with a couple of the new G2 Tamron lenses.
I have printed 11x14's from each camera. And every lens.
Nobody and I mean nobody, can tell which camera I used.
The more pixels and the higher ISO wars, are a way for companies to sell cameras.
I read almost every word printed, about every camera and lens I bought.
In my reasearch, I found that 8 mega pixels is all the average photographer needs.
As far as a camera with a 2,785,643,096,037 ISO. My guess is, unless you are a Vampire it isn't all that important.

People talk about the ability to crop with more pixels. Cropping shouldn't be used as a substitute for composition or changing a lens, but in a situation where you feel a need to crop out part of a picture, more pixels give you a bit of flexibility.

I cropped every shot that hangs om my wall. You still can't tell the 10 mp's from the 21's.

Other factors not considered, I think the desired size of the resultant print would dictate the number of pixels. I have a photo in my current exhibit that I took with an iPhone 6s (I'm not telling which one). The print is 8" x 10." I'd question the quality if printed larger (say, 16" x 20").

It would probably surprise you at how good it is.

You're right. I just had it enlarged to a 16" x 20" canvas wrap. It looks darn good!

This much? Taken with my Nikon D810 and my 50mm f/1.4D. Download the crop, zoom in and read the bag. I'm sorry. I've had cameras of 5, 6 12, 20 and 36 megapixels, and you can't do this and show this much detail with any of them other than the D810 at 36 megapixels. If I had wanted to actually take this crummy picture as cropped, I would have used a 200mm lens, but I didn't have one with me.

Don’t know if this was ever posted here before, but I thought this was interesting not trying to start a debate. Just useful info, it comes from the internet where everything is true right.
Seems to be a bit different here.

My full frame Nikon Df has 16MP, that's all I need.
MP count is overrated and is a sales gimmick as much as anything else.

Hmm, I wonder. My friend Frank Lee Ruggles has been shooting with a Pentax 645Z 51MP camera. Of course, his prints are poster size and larger.

He recently did a wall mural for a customer. I daresay that might be pushing your 16MP a bit.

Thank you Gene very good analysis. I worked as an Art Director in advertising and as you know we used much bigger format cameras.
And we needed at list 300 or more to print well. At least that is what the printers wanted. Used to go national food shots on 8x10 Kodachrome.
This is why producers like me say use 4k video so we can recrop a shot for a different view and still have sharpness.
Actually so far I don't like working with 4k dont like the look of it. New mirrorless and DSLR have the ability to extract frames from the 4k.

Actually, I don't disagree. My demonstration of the cropping ability with 36 megapixels was just that. Not an ideal way to take pictures, but if you ever find yourself with a lens that isn't long enough for the shot you want to take, you have an option. I bought that camera on a whim and admit it's overkill by a lot, which is why I'll never go higher unless that's all they offer at some point and I need a new camera. I don't own the D850 and will not buy one. I'll admit that some of the newer features and added speed over the D810 would be nice, but I think that people who buy it to have the latest and greatest are deluding themselves into believing that they're going to get much better IQ out of it compared with the other D8xx cameras. Better lenses are a much greater factor in IQ. I see that with my own lenses.
