This is narrow gauge steam engine #346 sitting in it's stall at the Colorado Railroad Museum roundhouse. The first image is from film (Rolleiflex 2.8 Planar, TMax 100, scanned) and the second is a b/w digital HDR.

Thanks Pat. Think I prefer the digital version, it looks much cleaner. I didn't apparently do a very good job of scanning the film neg. I should do another scan, this time wet scanning it to see if that cleans it up a bit.

Each photo is working in differing ways. The first one suggest a "long-time-ago" feel. The second one is a "gussied up" shot, getting ready for guests.

Great images.

Nice shots. My first reaction was ,like you, I preferred the digital shot. After looking for a while the tonal separation between the front of the engine and the rest of the image has me preferring the film version. LOL if I keep looking that could change again.

In the 2nd shot, would you happen to know what the contraption with wheels (stage left) is for? It looks familiar, but I can't place it. It may be some rigged up cart.

Don't know if this has anything to do with what you see, but during the PP of the scanned neg, I added some "structure" to the boiler door. There was very little contrast there until that was done.

My main problem with the film version is the amount of grain present. For me at least, scanning seems to exaggerate the amount of grain that is already present in the negative. Wet scanning the negative may reduce the grain but I haven't given that a try yet.

No I don't Stephan. There appears to be two carts actually, the front one with something very heavy, perhaps a water pump or air compressor? Hopefully someone here might know.

I understand. It is amazing how many one-of-a-kind work ups there are. I should have followed through with my idea of documenting the many I did see over the decades.
