Nikon is really pushing the hype for the new mirrorless camera. Today I received a Nikon e-mail with a video (with Japanese language soundtrack) extolling Nikon Body Design history and asking us to check in on August 23rd for the product introduction.

Meh. I’ll pay attention when online stores say it is “Now Shipping.” 3? 6? 9? 12? 18 months out?

They sure are, I also still remember all the hype recently for the D850. I'm hoping Nikon will come out with a few mid range mirrorless models.

Uh, they made them for 8 years. They were called Nikon 1 series.

I saw pictures of the new mirrorless Nikons, supposedly leaked. The camera looked like it was as large as a crop sensor dslr. The pictures showed the camera being held by an Asian woman, so there was some scale to compare its size to. Of course, she could have been very small, making the camera appear larger.

No thank you Nikon. Changing the lens mount is a deal breaker.

Why? First you need to understand lens to film plane (sensor) registration distance. Then MAYBE you will understand why NO ONE makes a mirrorless camera that mounts the same lenses as a SLR (mirrored) camera body without an adaptor to make that registration distance compatible. Its simply impossible to do so. Period!

It's possible although not desirable! The Pentax K-01 was a mirrorless that use the same K mount. If Nikon were to use the F mount on their new mirrorless they can but that would be a disaster for them.

There is an adapter, right? Why all the fuss?

No fuss. Just say that while it’s pssible to retain the F mount it’s better ti introduce the new mount.

Yes, and it was an abyssmal failure due to that fact. (It was totally discontinued less that one year from introduction.) It had the sensor recessed in the body keeping the body bigger and deeper than other mirrorless bodies. That approach can always be taken, but if the body is the same size as SLR models there is no competitive advantage to building one. As Pentax quickly found out. Even their bright color selection was of no help for sales. Plus you lose one other major advantage of mounting the srnsor nearer the lens mount, that of other lens adaptability.

Absolutely, no lens functions at all are lost via the F Mount adapter. PLUS the new Z mount is actually large enough for the body to accept an even larger MEDIUM FORMAT sensor, which Nikon has bern also toying with for about 3 years now.

Uh, I understand that, I have the J5. The Nikon1 series is discontinued and their coming out with a completely new mirrorless system to compete with Sony's top of the line. That's why I was wondering if their going to still make the mid-range mirrorless cameras.

The word is there will be 2 Nikon FF Mirrorless cameras. One 24MP and one 45MP. No rumors of an APS-C version as of yet.

The last thing I saw officially from Nikon is that an adapter is under development. I have seen rumors to support what you say. Is there anything from Nikon that confirms 'no loss of function?
